Dakota Johnson officially joins Sony’s Spider-Man Universe in the first Madame Web trailer, finally giving the world a taste of the mysterious Marvel adventure. One of the most ambitious projects for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has been Madame Web, featuring Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a powerful clairvoyant who has psychic abilities that let her tap into the spider world. Despite having finished filming Madame Web in 2022, Sony Pictures has been secretive about this anticipated Sony Spider-Man Universe movie compared to their other installments.

As Madame Web will be one of the only Marvel movies to release in 2024, Sony Pictures has finally released the first Madame Web trailer, showcasing Johnson as the titular heroine from the Spider-Man mythology. Directed by S.J. Clarkson, based on a script from Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, Madame Web also stars Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, a.k.a. Spider-Woman, marking the character’s live-action debut.

Outside of Johnson and Sweeney, Madame Web features Adam Scott, Emma Roberts, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Zosia Mamet. With the SAG-AFTRA strike finally over, Madame Web is on track to arrive in February 2024. Sony Pictures also released the first official Madame Web synopsis, describing Cassandra Webb’s storyline as follows:

“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.

One of the key elements from the Madame Web trailer is setting up Cassandra’s conflict with Rahim’s Ezekiel Sims, who is donning a Spider-Man-esque costume. Like Cassandra, Ezekiel appears to be able to see into the future, too, which brings her together with the younger girls. Based on the context of the Madame Web trailer alone, Ezekiel seems to be going after them based on what he learns about them in the future.

The footage also gives a first good look at Sweeney as Spider-Woman, but it also teases more details about the Madame Web cast. While the Madame Web trailer doesn’t flat out say or confirm their names, based on their costumes alone, it does appear that Merced and O’Connor are playing Anya Corazon and Mattie Franklin, better known as Spider-Girl and Spider-Woman, respectively. In the comics, there have been numerous characters who use the Spider-Woman mantle, but it remains to be seen if Julia and Mattie will be using the same name in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

While Sony Pictures may have hidden Madame Web for a long time, this first trailer looks promising and could be a solid new foundation for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe to build from. Adam Scott is rumored to play a young Ben Parker while Emma Roberts may be playing his sister, Peter’s mother, which would set-up Madame Web as a Spider-Man prequel. Hopefully, more details about Madame Web will emerge sooner rather than later as the movie approaches its February 2024 release.
