While the Victor Wembanyama hype reinvigorated San Antonio basketball fans over the summer, this season has been far from meeting those championship aspirations. Folks on Reddit are just about over head coach Gregg Popovich.

“If we ignore that Pop is the winningest NBA coach of all time with five championships under his belt, who else do you think would do a better job coaching the Spurs this season? And what do you think they would do that Pop isn’t doing?” U/amofai asked in the post.

Although u/amofai proposed the question, the user wasn’t a believer in the coaching staff needing a shake-up to get back to championship aspirations. But some fans are thinking the Spurs want another high draft pick in 2024.

“Tanking is an organizational decision. If you fire Pop and replace him with anyone, they’re still gonna try and lose,” U/tbuk100 said in the comments. “It’s not an accident our PF is our PG despite Wembys improved performance when paired with Tre. It’s not an accident Spurs don’t draw up plays for Wemby and treat him like he’s a guard rather than 7’4.”

Reddit user guillaume_rx is looking at another NBA Champion coach to replace Popovich.

“The answer is Steve Kerr in five years once Curry is done, and Pop retires having built an incoming dynasty. A boy can dream about Kerr. The dynasty part looks very likely when you look at long-term potential,” U/guillaume_rx.

While the 12-game skid is something that Spurs fans aren’t used to, the organization is also in a five-year playoff drought, not all fans are losing hope in Popovich. U/Secret-Discipline-18 simply put it, “In Pop we trust.”
