Renowned Acting Teacher Lesly Kahn Gives Top Tips for Actors to Break in and Succeed in the Entertainment Industry

Act, read, watch and perform every single day among top tips from founder of Lesly Kahn & Company

LOS ANGELES, January 09, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Breaking into Hollywood and having a successful career in film and television can be an uphill battle, but according to one of the top acting teachers in the business, there are a few simple things actors can do to increase their success in Tinseltown. Renowned acting teacher Lesly Kahn offers these tips to actors on all levels to get the roles they want and maintain a successful career in the entertainment industry.

  • Act every day, even if it’s just for 10 or 15 minutes. Act with another actor, with a script between you and someone else watching, and do that every single day. Even if you have three full-time jobs, six or seven parents, 23 husbands, 16 dogs to walk and another 19 other things that need to be done, find the time to act every single day.

  • Watch television and movies. You must know what’s getting made and see how other actors are handling those roles. You can learn so much from watching other actors and by studying direction and cinematography. Knowing the types of shows and movies being made keeps your finger on the pulse of the entertainment industry – what’s popular and what’s not.

  • Perform live. Do a play, get into an improv group, do standup! Get out there. Performing live will give you instant feedback on your skills and abilities as well as enable you to further develop your acting chops. It will also help you learn to work with other performers.

  • Get an agent or a manager. Easier said than done, yes, but not impossible. Do your research and find the agent or manager you feel is right for you and who handles other actors like you. Set your standards high but at the same time be realistic about who might be interested in helping you develop your career.

  • Be familiar with casting directors. Know who the different casting directors are, what they have worked on and their areas of specialty, if any. It helps when walking in the room for an audition to know who is on the other side of the table and a little bit about them.

Lesly Kahn is one of the most prolific, highly regarded and well-known acting teachers of her generation. During the past 30 years, more than 30,000 actors have passed through her doors with many going on to have successful careers in film, television and theater – including several who have won or been nominated for an Academy Award, Emmy or Tony. As the founder and artistic director of Lesly Kahn & Company, Kahn works with a faculty of approximately 50 professionals who teach, train and prepare thousands of actors every year through a variety of courses, workshops, classes and individual coaching that cover every aspect of an actor’s career. Classes are offered on a wide range of acting topics, as well as specialty subjects such as self-taping, auditions, social media, martial arts, commercial acting, voice work, stand-up comedy and accents.
