Almost forty years after Prince released the ‘Purple Rain’ (1984) film and soundtrack album, the story is heading to the Broadway stage. According to the Hollywood Reporter, this stage adaptation will feature a score from the late Prince and a script by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Jacob-Jenkins’ script will be based on the film’s screenplay, which was written by its directors, Albert Magnoli and William Blinn. Lileana Blain-Cruz, who was nominated for a Tony for Best Play Direction in 2022 for ‘The Skin of Our Teeth’, is set to direct this new adaptation. ‘Purple Rain’ is an American rock musical drama starring Prince as The Kid, a rock musician from Minneapolis. “We can’t think of a more fitting tribute than to honor Prince and the ‘Purple Rain’ legacy… We are thrilled with our Broadway partners and creative team. We can’t wait for a new generation to discover ‘Purple Rain’,” said L. Londell McMillan, Chairman of The NorthStar Group.
