It wasn’t the return to the big stage that 2012 Olympic all-around champion Gabby Douglas was hoping for.
In her first major competitive gymnastics meet since the 2016 Olympics at the U.S. Classic, Douglas struggled on her opening apparatus, the uneven bars, scoring a 10.100.
Douglas left the arena’s field of play after bars, and minutes later USA Gymnastics confirmed that Douglas did, indeed, scratch, from the remainder of the competition after bars.
The withdrawal means Douglas will fail to qualify for the all-around at U.S. Championships later this month. She is not eligible to petition to compete on all four apparatus because she previously earned an all-around score at April’s American Classic.
But Douglas, 28, has already qualified in three apparatuses for nationals, which are set to start on 30 May in Fort Worth. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials are set to take place at the end of June in Minneapolis.
