Things aren’t going terribly well for Jennifer Lopez’s music career at the moment. As the singer deals with several major recent setbacks, she’s also earned a handful of new awards–ones which show that the public is still listening to her songs…at least her classics.
Two of Lopez’s earliest hit singles have finally earned some love from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). That organization certifies songs and albums gold, platinum, and beyond once they reach certain consumption thresholds in the United States.
Both “Let’s Get Loud” and “Waiting for Tonight” scored their first two RIAA awards recently. The superstar’s tracks were certified gold and platinum at the same time, going from no honors to several at once.
In the U.S., songs and albums earn gold certifications once they’ve moved at least 500,000 equivalent units. They advance to platinum status once they’ve shifted 1,000,000 units, between pure sales and streaming equivalents.
“Let’s Get Loud” and “Waiting for Tonight” mark Lopez’s first new non-Latin certifications from the RIAA since 2022. That year, her smash “Jenny From the Block” went platinum for the first time. In between those wins, she’s seen one of her Latin cuts, “El Anillo,” jump to eight-times platinum, though the RIAA uses a different system for Spanish-language tunes.
Both “Let’s Get Loud” and “Waiting for Tonight” were featured on Lopez’s debut album On the 6. The former never reached the Hot 100, based on how the ranking was compiled at the time, but it has become one of her signature tracks. “Waiting for Tonight” cracked the top 10 on that chart, giving the singer her second placement inside that tier.
These new platinum plaques may help Lopez feel a bit better about her work in the music world. She recently had to cancel her once-upcoming This Is Me… Live concert trek, which was slated to take place throughout the U.S. this summer. The superstar recently pulled the plug, likely due to low ticket sales, though the reason given was so she could spend more time with family and friends.
Earlier this year, Lopez released her first new album in a decade, This Is Me…Now. The set debuted and peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard 200, underperforming expectations. It also failed to produce a hit single, and it quickly fell from the charts.
