The 124th U.S. Open Golf Championship commenced with an exciting start on Thursday morning at the Pinehurst No. 2 course, as Patrick Cantlay took the lead after the first round in North Carolina.

Jon Rahm‘s absence was notable at the U.S. Open after he pulled out with a foot infection. This unexpected turn of events has left a void in the tournament, as Rahm was one of the top contenders. However, he posted on social media that he is enjoying the show from the comfort of his home as he heals his foot injury.

Cantlay finished the first round at Pinehurst No. 2 with an opening-round score of 5-under 65. He had a one-shot lead over the young star Ludvig Åberg of Sweden. Cantlay’s 65 matched the lowest start at Pinehurst No. 2, with Martin Kaymer last posting the score in 2014. Cantlay is hoping to keep the momentum going and win his first PGA major of 2024.
