SACKETS HARBOR — The annual Sackets Harbor Quilt Show, hosted by Hay Memorial Library, is Friday, Saturday and Sunday at two locations.
The theme for this year’s show, featuring over 75 quilts, is “For the Birds.” It will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the Historic Union Hotel, 401 W. Main St., and the Sackets Harbor Visitor Center, 301 W. Main St. Vendors, classes and exhibits are at the Union Hotel, with the special family quilt collection on view at the Visitor Center.
General admission is a suggested donation of $5, good for all three days.
The exhibits
■ “For the Birds: 2023 Challenge Quilts.” Cast your ballot for your favorite quilt, choose among entries made by quilters from our region of New York State.
■ “Something Old, Something New.” Inspiration for upcycling textile and paper projects — from hand-woven rugs and fabric handbags to upcycled beads.
■ “Birds of a Feather: Cuppernell + Knapp.” Avian-themed art quilts “from the vault’ by noted north country quilters Mary Knapp and Emelie Cuppernell.
■ “Fabulous Faces.” Forty contemporary portrait quilts from California art quilting duo Jean Impey and Freddie Moran.
■ “Fabric-AIons: Every Quilt Tells a Story.” Back by popular request, north Country family heritage quilts, each with a story about its origins, maker and heritage.
There will also be a Minna Anthony Nature Center decoy dxhibit and a North Country Bird Club’s table of guides, books and prints.
Classes and demos
■ Mary Knapp will lead a make and take class, “Geese in the Cornfield,” an original design combining a fresh interpretation of classic paterns, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The fee is $15 and includes take-home templates and paterns.
■ Vicki Wilson will lead “Sackets Harbor Cardinal,” a make and take class where participants can create a charming felt cardinal ornament. It’s from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The fee is $5 and icludes kit, materials, and take-home instructions for crafting your own flock.
■ The Quilt Shop on State Street staff demos, “Stripology,” a tool kit and technique for making cutting easy. All day Saturday. Kits will be available for purchase at vendor booth.
■ Emelie Cuppernell will demonstrate petal-play, “A Little Bird,” with take home templates and instruction, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
■ Bedford Creek Press will host “Try your hand at letterpress art” to make a tiny bird print,” creating a bird-themed art bookmark from letterpress cuts. Sunday only, all day. Free, one print per person.
