Taylor Swift is known to dominate the charts, but also, for helping amplify other artists. And she and her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, did just that at the U.S. Open on Sunday, September 8.
During the event, the power couple was spotted rocking out to The Darkness’ “I Believe In A Thing Called Love.” According to a report from Variety, their cute viral moment helped boost the song’s streams.
The outlet noted that streams of the song “spiked nearly 70 percent on the platform in the U.S. as compared to streams the day prior” on Monday, September 9. They also shared that searches for The Darkness increased 65% within the U.S., and 60% globally.
Following the viral moment, The Darkness’ lead vocalist Justin Hawkins took to TikTok, reacting to Swift and Kelce’s singalong. In the video, he revealed that he and his daughter attended one of Swift’s Eras Tour concerts in Zurich. He thanked Swift for her hospitality and shared that she wrote the two a letter.
“[The letter] was waiting for me in the VIP section talking about how much she loves the song ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love,'” Hawkins said. “I was just dad of the year, maybe dad of the century ’cause all of that was a big surprise.”
“I Believe In A Thing Called Love” was originally released in 2003, and reached No. 9 on the Billboard US Alternative Airplay chart at the time. Though the song failed to crack the Hot 100 upon its original release, perhaps Swift and Kelce’s little dance may help give the song a second life.
