Writers Salon posts Fall 2024 season
ONEONTA — The Community Arts Network of Oneonta has announced this fall’s Writers Salon schedule.
According to a media release, the Writers Salon will begin Sept. 19 with a rehearsed reading of Tobin Wheeler’s new drama, “Tangled Web,” by the Catskill Community Players.
The Oneonta Literary Festival kicks off with a big weekend of events on Oct. 17, and the salon be departing from its regular schedule, the release stated. The Writers Salon will host a reading with Cooperstown poet Rebecca Weil at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, and an Author Expo (a book-fair-style event featuring local writers) from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20. In November, the salon will be back on the third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. with Brad Fest, who will read from his new book of poems, “2013 — 2017: Sonnets.”
Events will be held at Wilber Mansion at 11 Ford Ave. in Oneonta.
Up-close photos to be shown
ONEONTA — The Delaware Otsego Audubon Society will present “A Closer Look” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the Elm Park United Methodist Church at 401 Chestnut Street in Oneonta or on Zoom.
According to to a media release, photographer Rick Bunting explores aspects of both the design and behavior of a wide variety of insects, mammals, amphibians and birds through both the macro and telephoto lenses in “A Closer Look.” The photos provide views of nature’s wildlife that escape the naked eye. Since his retirement from SUNY Potsdam and the Crane School of Music, Bunting pursues his passion for photography full time. Also an accomplished musician, Rick photographs at home and wherever he travels.

Blacksmithing discussion set
COOPERSTOWN — Get to know The Farmers’ Museum’s master blacksmith interpreters during a live Zoom discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19.
According to a media release, blacksmiths Lucas Novko and John Davidson will discuss their craft, share their experiences and expertise and answer questions. The discussion will also offer a preview of The Farmers’ Museum’s upcoming Blacksmithing Weekend on Sept. 28-29, which features demonstrations of traditional tool and hardware making plus related hands-on activities throughout the museum both days. Blacksmiths working on a number of forges will show the versatility of the blacksmith’s craft. Learn tips and secrets of the trade from knowledgeable staff and visiting blacksmiths.

Duo to discuss Otsego County project
COOPERSTOWN — Duo Extempore will talk about an upcoming project about Otsego County at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Fenimore Art Museum.
According to a media release, Nicole Brancato and Evan Jagels of Duo Extempore will lead a discussion highlighting their process of musical improvisation outside of traditional contexts and go inside techniques of using field recordings in dialogue with new music and film creation. The talk, titled “Ordinary Places: Exploring Otsego County through Sound and Image,” will touch on past film projects, which include “It’s Nice to be on the Island” (filmed and recorded on New York City’s Roosevelt Island), “The Search for Up” (filmed and recorded at Wright Observatory), and detail their current project on Otsego County.
Duo Extempore interprets history, art and space through music, the release stated. Pushing the boundaries for what a piano and bass can do together, Brancato and Jagels are exploring every shape of music, through film, technology, performance and beyond. Their distinct programs, ranging from museum concerts on period instruments to indie music films to performances with amplified plants. Duo Extempore’s curated improvisations draw from classical and jazz virtuosity, and weave together storytelling, local history, architecture and audience interaction. Brancato and Jagel’s performance credits include Carnegie Hall, the Banff Centre of the Arts in Canada, Bellas Artes Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramírez in Mexico, the Blue Note in Germany, and the UniJazz Festival in Czech Republic.

Delaware County Arts Grant Cycle opens
The Delaware County Arts Grant Cycle has opened ahead of the grant application opening on Oct. 18.
According to a media release, the Roxbury Arts Group administers the Delaware County Arts Grant, a re-grant program of the state Council on the Arts, in Delaware County. Delaware County Arts Grant funds are used to support projects in three areas: Community Arts, Creative Learning, and Individual Artist. Applicants to this grant can receive up to $5,000 of funding.
The application period opens Oct. 18, and closes Jan. 17, 2025, the release stated. Attendance of an information session or a one-on-one session with the Creative Opportunities Coordinator is required for application. Sessions begin in late September and go through mid-December and will be held in-person and on Zoom.
The in-person sessions are:
at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at Roxbury Arts Center at 5025 Vega Mountain Road in Roxbury; at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Headwaters Arts Center, 66 Main St., in Stamford; and at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15 at Bushel Collective at 106 Main St., in Delhi.
The online Zoom sessions are at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 – Individual Artist Session, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. Only those RSVP’d on the Roxbury Arts Grant website for the Zoom information sessions will receive the Zoom link.
The Creative Opportunities Coordinator Ursula Hudak will have open hours at the HUBB on Main Street, Margaretville on Sept. 25. Come by to inquire about the grant and eligibility.
