Champions League, Day 3

Brescia – Steaua, 17-8

The first quarter indicated that the game could be very interesting. Steaua led 1-0 and 3-2. Nine seconds before the first break, Brescia leveled at 3-3. Brescia ruled the field in the second half, it netted five goals – most of them from quick attacks. Brescia stretched the margin to six from a counterattack in the 19th minute (9-3) and Steaua couldn’t get back into the match. Team USA attacker Max Irving notched two goals in the win.

Pro Recco – Olympiacos, 12-11

Olympiacos got off to a dream start. The Greeks needed less than five minutes to earn a 3-0 lead. Recco caught up with the visitors quickly with a 3-0 run to end the first quarter. Olympiacos opened the second period similarly to the first one, with two goals, and went up 5-3. Recco leveled, but Olympiacos rebuilt a two-goal advantage midway through the second quarter. Then came another 3-0 series for Recco in almost precisely the same way as in the first quarter. The hosts scored three unanswered goals in the last 125 seconds of the period.

Recco prolonged its series to a fourth consecutive goal, scoring for 9-7 in its first possession of the second half. The Greeks leveled at 9-9. Recco replied with two but couldn’t build a big advantage. Olympiacos trailed 10-11 before the final frame. After 21 goals in the first three periods, defenses dominated in the fourth quarter. Team USA center Ben Hallock was the one who finally opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with his second score of the contest to push Pro Recco ahead 12-10. The Italians kept that advantage for a long time. The Greeks ended a long silence via a six-meter goal with 1:32 left on the clock. Recco lost the ball in its next possession and Olympiacos got a 6-on-5 chance to equalize but hit the crossbar with 25 seconds remaining and Recco kept the ball and the points.

Jug Dubrovnik – Dinamo Tbilisi, 12-5

Jug Dubrovnik cruised to a win in this one behind five goals from Team USA attacker Hannes Daube. Dinamo’s attack was harmless in the first two quarters. Jug’s defense was up to the task, but it didn’t have much to do. Dinamo eventually got on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute. Until then, Jug already found the net eight times. In the fourth quarter, Dinamo could only avoid a bigger catastrophe.

Jadran Split – Ferencvaros, 11-13

Team USA attacker Thomas Gruwell and Jadran Split lost a close one on the road. Ferencvaros opened the match with two goals, while Jadran got on the scoreboard in the 7th minute when to make it 1-2. The Croats caught up with the hosts seven minutes later (3-3). The Hungarians answered with two goals in consecutive attacks for 5-3 and from that point on, they retained the lead. Jadran chased the rival persistently and trailed by a goal three and a half minutes before the last break (6-7). Then, Ferencvaros produced a 4-0 run in 3:25 of game time to head into the fourth period with a big 11-6 lead. The contest seemed to be over, however, the visitors managed to score three goals in a row. Two minutes and 15 seconds from the end Jadran scored for 10-12. They had a chance to come even closer but could not do it.

Spandau 04 – Vouliagmeni, 14-13

Spandau needed less than three minutes to jump ahead 3-0 in this match. Early in the second period, the hosts had a 6-2 lead, but Vouliagmeni was able to come back. At halftime, the score stood at 9-6. Vouliagmeni opened the second half in the same way Spandau opened the first period – with three straight goals. Shortly after, Spandau converted a man-up advantage for a 10-9 lead at the finish of the third period. Vouliagmeni leveled at 10-10, 11-11, and 13-13 in the fourth quarter, but it never took a lead. Spandau and Team USA attacker Tyler Abramson hit the game-winner with his fourth goal, this one from deep on the left side with 31 seconds remaining on the clock. Team USA defender Dylan Woodhead scored once for Vouliagmeni in defeat.

Euro Cup, Group Phase, Day 2

Telimar – Solaris, 11-9

Solaris dominated the first half of the game in Palermo. The Croats were up 5-2 at halftime. But Telimar, led by Team USA attackers Johnny Hooper and Quinn Woodhead, found its rhythm in the second half. The hosts scored five goals in a row and turned the three-goal deficit around into an 8-5 lead. Solaris ended its goalless phase in the 24th minute (6-7), but Hooper beat the buzzer on a power play for an 8-6 lead one second before the last break. Hooper finished with four goals and Woodhead added three.

Savona – Vasas, 17-18

Savona opened with a 2-0 and 3-1 lead. Vasas netted four goals in a row and went up 5-3. But, five seconds before the end of the first quarter, Savona scored an action goal for 4-5 and leveled at 5-5 early in the second period. From there, the teams traded goals. Savona equalized at 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, and 9-9, but the Italians had no response after Vasas found the net from distance with eight seconds left in the second quarter. Vasas ruled the field in the third period. The hosts scored the first five goals in the second half and jumped ahead 15-9. It seemed that Vasas would record a comfortable victory. The hosts were five steps ahead of the Italians (18-13) with 3:38 left on the clock. But Savona scored the last four goals in the match, all with a man-up advantage, and came very close to the hosts. The Italians’ 17th goal came 29 seconds before the final buzzer. After that, Vasas kept the ball and the three points. Team USA attacker Marko Vavic found the back of the net for Savona in the narrow loss.

Waspo 98 – Primorje, 9-13

Team USA utility man Kacper Langiewicz and Waspo 98 had a 4-2 advantage in the first quarter. The opening minutes of the second period saw a balanced battle. In the 14th minute, Primorje scored from a 6-on-5 for its first lead in the game (7-6) and made it 8-6 shortly after. In the second half, the hosts kept the distance and stretched the margin to four at the finish.

Ortigia – Trieste, 12-11

Trieste had a flying start in the Italian derby and rushed to 3-0 in the first four and a half minutes. Ortigia cut the deficit to one goal by the end of the first quarter. Still, the hosts controlled the result. Ortigia leveled for the first time in the 18th minute at 6-6 and again at 7-7, 8-8, and 9-9. In the 23rd minute, Ortigia took its first advantage, but Trieste leveled at 10-10 in the dying seconds of the third. At the beginning of the final frame, Ortigia sent the ball into the net and the visitors were in front again, but not for long. Trieste equalized on the following possession. In the next few minutes, there were no goals. Ortigia ended that phase with a power-play goal for 11-12 in the 30th minute. Trieste’s efforts to level the score didn’t materialize and Ortigia went home with three points. Team USA attacker Luca Cupido orchestrated a hat trick for Ortigia.
