Whether you’ve been married multiple times or have yet to walk down the aisle, we’re hoping we can all agree that getting engaged is a pretty big deal. In addition to telling the world you’re officially together for the long haul, you’re telling each other you’re ready to spend the rest of your lives together.
But, as you’ll find out in this list, saying “yes” and getting down on one knee doesn’t always mean you’ll be walking down the aisle at all. In fact, according to many celebrity couples, getting engaged didn’t stop them for calling off their relationship months or even years since hitting the engagement milestone.
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, for example, broke off their engagement back in 2004 after two years together. Luckily for them, however, walking down the aisle happened eventually (just 18 years later!). For many others couples, however, the split was pretty definite, despite being heartbreaking for them, and their rooting fans.
