If you enter the words “Dr. Woo” and “tattoo” into Google’s search function, one of the first things that pops up is the question, ‘How to get an appointment.’

The popularity of the search history proves the celebrated tattoo artist is highly in demand. But, if you needed further proof, one needs to look no farther than the renowned Los Angeles artist’s list of A-list celebrities who sport a Dr. Woo tattoo.

Dr. Woo — a.k.a. Brian Woo — will be at Holt Renfrew in Vancouver on Sept. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. — not to tattoo — but rather for a public appearance and book-signing in celebration of his first coffee table release, Everything is Permanent, along with Woo’s partnership with the fashion brand AGOLDE. The fashion company has released a capsule of fleece designs featuring graphics inspired by the cover art of the book.

In advance of his appearance, we caught up with Dr. Woo to ask five questions about his work:

Q: What do you enjoy most about tattooing?

A: Getting to meet different people from different backgrounds and having some real, interesting conversations.

Q: Vogue called you “fashion’s favourite tattoo artist.” What are your thoughts on holding that title?

A: (Laughs) I think it’s cool. I mean, there’s so many stylish, cool tattoo artists and creators in fashion, but I think we all love the artistic visual voice. Fashion is always a big connection because expressing who we are is like breathing for an artist, and fashion is just one of the big parts of that — it’s like our armour; it’s how we wear feelings on the outside.

Q: How would you describe the intersection between tattoos and fashion?

A: I think they’re both such expressive forms of sharing who we are on the outside, one version is just what we wear and the other is just what we put permanently on our skin.

Q: What keeps you inspired?

A: Discovering — seeing and hearing about new artists, architecture, food, design — anything that is newly discovered, or recently rediscovered. Seeing other artists with a very strong sense of themselves always inspires me to find that within myself as well.

Q: Lastly, what can people expect from the Vancouver fashion event at Holt Renfrew?

A: A moment for all of us to not worry about work and other stresses and just to meet new people, have a good time, and maybe walk away with a great conversation.
