Film and TV producer Charles D. King, whose MACRO media company was created to amplify the work of people of color, will receive the Producers Guild of America’s Milestone Award for his contributions to the film industry, the guild announced Tuesday.
“Charles King’s achievements in our industry are undeniable whether as an agent representing important voices or as the producer responsible for the growing empire that is MACRO, a multi-platform media company that represents the voice and perspectives of Black people and persons of color,” PGA Presidents Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line said in a joint statement. “Since its inception in 2015, MACRO films have garnered 15 Oscar nominations including one for King as producer of Best Picture nominee `Judas and the Black Messiah.’ He continues to trailblaze with his invaluable contributions via his creative storytelling and we are proud to honor him.”
King’s best picture nomination for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” earned along with Ryan Coogler and Shaka King, made them the first-ever all-Black producing team nominated for the Academy Awards’ top prize.
The PGA’s Milestone Award is presented to producers or production teams “that have made historic contributions to the entertainment industry. Previous recipients of the honor include Walt Disney, Louis B. Mayer, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Bob Iger, George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, Sherry Lansing, Clint Eastwood, James Cameron, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.
King previously worked as an agent at William Morris Endeavor, becoming that company’s first-ever Black partner and the first Black partner at any major talent agency.
“Finding the words to truly capture my deep gratitude for receiving the Milestone Award from the PGA is admittingly challenging,” King said in a statement released by the PGA. “To be acknowledged for this accomplishment and stand among the luminaries of our industry is both incredibly humbling and a profound honor.
“I launched MACRO nine years ago with the mission of amplifying the voices and perspectives of persons of color. I’m so proud of my colleagues and the extraordinary producers, filmmakers and artists that I have had the honor of working with over the years — together we’ve shaped MACRO into a force in the industry. We are blessed to do what we do every day, and the road ahead holds boundless promise.”
King will receive the award during the 35th annual Producers Guild of America Awards on Feb. 25.
