Colorado edges ASU with late field goal in Pac-12 game
Colorado defeated ASU with a 43-yard field goal from Alejandro Mata with 12 seconds left to get a 27-24 win in a Pac-12 college football game on Saturday at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe, 27-24.
ASU had rallied to tie the game after an impressive 13-play, 94-yard touchdown drive with 50 seconds left, but Colorado went 50 yards over five plays in 38 seconds and hit the field goal to give Deion Sanders his first Pac-12 victory.
Colorado improved to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in Pac-12 play with the victory. ASU fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The Buffaloes outscored Arizona State in the second half, 13-7 after ASU had led at the half, 17-14.
Shedeur Sanders went 26-for-42 passing for 239 yards for Colorado, well under his average of 356.2 yards passing per game entering the game. He had a touchdown passing and one rushing.
But it was enough to beat ASU.
Trenton Bourguet was 32-for-49 for 335 yards for ASU, with one touchdown pass and a rushing score as well.
ASU out-gained Colorado in yards, 392-295.
The Sun Devils had the ball for 34:48, while the Buffaloes had it for 25:12.
Elijhah Badger had 12 receptions for 134 yards for ASU. Javon Antonio led Colorado with five catches for 81 yards and a touchdown, including a key 45-yard gain late that set up Colorado’s winning score.
Colorado only rushed for 56 yards. ASU only rushed for 57.
Colorado hosts Stanford next Friday. ASU is off next week before playing at Washington on Oct. 21.

Colorado pulls ahead with late field goal against ASU
On the first play of Colorado’s ensuing drive, Shedeur Sanders found Javon Antonio for a 45-yard gain. Antonio got behind Ro Torrence on the play and was wide open for the big gain.
ASU rebounded, however, to stop Colorado on three straight plays to force a 43-yard field goal attempt from Alejandro Mata.
Mata drilled the field goal to take a 27-24 lead with 12 seconds left in the game.

ASU football responds late vs. Colorado to tie game
ASU had to get something going on offense late in the fourth quarter, trailing 24-17.
It finally did.
The Sun Devils engineered a 79-yard scoring drive over 13 plays, getting a touchdown on a 15-yard pass from Trenton Bourguet to Troy Omeire with 50 seconds left.
Cameron Skattebo picked up a huge first down on a 2-yard run on 4th and 1 at the Colorado 32 on the drive.
ASU’s drive took 2:36 off the clock.
It was the Sun Devils’ first points of the second half.
Colorado will have 50 seconds left to try to win the game.
Score: Arizona State 24, Colorado 24 (50 seconds left in fourth quarter)
ASU defense gets stop to give offense one more chance vs. Colorado
Colorado had to punt against ASU after gaining 21 yards on seven plays on its drive, giving ASU the ball at its own 5-yard line.
But the Sun Devils have the ball, and they have a chance with 3:33 remaining in the fourth quarter.
ASU has not scored in the second half and has failed to get anything going.
Now it must drive 95 yards to try to get back in this game.
ASU comes up empty against Colorado
It’s going to be up to ASU’s defense to get another stop for the Sun Devils after the offense couldn’t answer Colorado’s score with points of its own.
Dario Longhetto missed a ‘s 52-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Carter Stoutmire after ASU’s drive stalled at the Colorado 34.
ASU had gained 31 yards on nine plays on the drive before stalling.
Colorado extends lead vs. Arizona State with field goal
The bad news for ASU? Colorado has now scored on back-to-back possessions to build a 7-point lead.
The good news? ASU’s defense held the Buffaloes to a field goal after Colorado started the possession with a 1st and 10 at ASU’s 26-yard line.
Alejandro Mata hit a 42-yard field goal for the score.
ASU hasn’t been able to get anything going in the second half on offense.
It could obviously use something on its next possession.

ASU fails to respond vs. Colorado
That was not the response Arizona State needed.
The Sun Devils went 3-and-out on their next possession, unable to get anything going.
Then Colorado’s Xavier Weaver returned the punt 51 yards to the ASU 25.
ASU’s defense has to step up here to slow down Colorado, who has all the momentum in this game.
Shedeur Sanders gives Colorado lead vs. Arizona State
We have our first points of the second half.
And they have given Colorado its first lead of the game.
Shedeur Sanders threw a 9-yard pass to Javon Antonio to give Colorado a 21-17 lead with 14:32 left in the fourth quarter.
Colorado’s drive went seven plays and 61 yards over 1:35.
Sanders’ propelled the Buffaloes on the drive, also picking up a key first down on a 12-yard run.
Colorado started the drive in good field position at their own 39 after Ed Woods was ejected for targeting, giving the Buffaloes great field position that they took advantage of.
Can ASU answer?
Score: Colorado 21, ASU 17 (14:32 left in fourth quarter)
Colorado defense gets to ASU’s Trenton Bourguet
Colorado hadn’t sacked ASU QB Trenton Bourguet all game.
They just sacked him twice on back-to-back plays, forcing ASU to punt.
Bourguet walked off the field gingerly.
ASU’s drive went for seven plays and 11 yards.
ASU defense gets to Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders again
The Sun Devils have been putting pressure on the Buffaloes’ Shedeur Sanders all game and they got to him again on a 3rd and 10 at the Colorado 46 when Prince Dorbah sacked Sanders for a loss of 17 yards.
Colorado’s drive went for nine plays and 19 yards.
Interestingly, Sanders is averaging 356.2 yards passing per game. He has 145 yards passing so far in this game.
ASU drive stalls against Colorado
The Sun Devils were forced to punt after a 10-play, 39 yard drive that took 5:32 off the clock on their first possession of the second half.
ASU went for it at 4th and 3 at its own 27-yard line on the drive, four plays into the drive, with Cameron Skattebo rushing six yards for the first down.
But the drive later stalled, despite the efforts of Skattebo, who also had runs of 11 yards and six yards on the possession.
Interestingly, it was the first possession that ASU failed to score on when it didn’t go three-and-out.
ASU defense forces Colorado to punt to start second half
The Arizona State defense forced Colorado to punt after just three plays on its first possession of the second half.
Colorado only gained three yards on the possession.
Colorado is just 2-for-9 on third down in the game.
Sun Devils do a lot of things right in first half against Buffaloes
The ASU football team did a lot of things right in the first half of its game against Colorado at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe on Saturday.
ASU leads the game at the half, 17-14 after scoring on a 33-yard field goal by Dario Longhetto as time expired.
The Sun Devils have 202 total yards. They are 4-for-8 on third downs. They are winning the time of possession battle, 16:25-13:35.
They have not turned the ball over.
QB Trenton Bourguet is 16-for-23 for 156 yards.
They have put pressure on Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders, who is 14-for-22 for 116 yards passing.
They have limited the Buffaloes to 34 yards rushing.
Both of these teams are seeking their first Pac-12 win this season, which would also be the first conference win for Deion Sanders or Kenny Dillingham.
It should be an entertaining second half to find out which team, and which coach, gets it.

ASU takes lead before half against Colorado
The Sun Devils responded to Colorado’s impressive late-half drive with one of their own.
Trenton Bourguet led Arizona State on a 7-play, 48-yard drive that only took 50 seconds, as ASU took a 17-14 lead on a 33-yard field goal from Dario Longhetto as time expired on the second quarter.
Bourguet completed passes of 22 yards and 14 yards on the drive. He also ran for 12 yards on one play.
It was just what ASU needed after Colorado had rallied to tie the game.
Score: ASU 17, Colorado 14 (halftime)
ASU can’t stop Shedeur Sanders, Colorado
ASU could not get another stop on Colorado toward the end of the first half in Tempe.
The Buffaloes drove 81 yards over nine plays to tie the game at 14 against Arizona State when Shedeur Sanders ran 16 yards for a touchdown on 3rd and 10 at the 16.
The drive, and the score, were key for Colorado, which will get the ball to start the second half.
ASU’s defense had done a good job of stopping Colorado for most of the half, but could not stop the Buffaloes on that possession.
Score: ASU 14, Colorado 15 (:50 left in second quarter)
ASU punts ball back to Colorado
The Sun Devils had to punt after gaining nine yards on three plays, giving the ball back to Colorado for another possession near the end of the first half.
The Buffaloes will get the ball to start the second half.
Can ASU get another stop to take a lead into the half?
Colorado forced to punt again against Arizona State
Let’s give the ASU defense some credit.
It is playing tough.
The Sun Devils just forced Colorado to a 3-and-out.
Shedeur Sanders is 10-for-16 passing for just 76 yards in this game.
ASU has only allowed the Buffaloes to gain 84 yards in this game.
Sun Devils take another lead on Buffaloes
We have ourselves a Cameron Skattebo sighting for the Sun Devils.
The ASU running back was just able to force his way into the end zone on a 1-yard run to give ASU a 14-7 lead.
The run ended a 9-play, 59-yard drive. It drive ended ASU’s skid of three straight possessions of going 3-and-out.
It is Skattebo’s fifth rushing touchdown of the season.
He is now up to four carries for 12 yards in this game.
ASU QB Trenton Bourguet is interestingly the Sun Devils’ leading rusher, with two carries for 13 yards.
ASU has only rushed for 29 yards in the game, but it has the lead. It will take it.
Score: ASU 14, Colorado 7 (6:38 left in second quarter)
Another defensive stop for ASU vs. Colorado
Colorado didn’t have much more luck on offense than ASU on the Buffaloes’ latest possession, as they went just seven yards.
ASU has limited Colorado to 1-for-6 on third downs. That’s not too shabby.
ASU is 2-for-5 on third down itself in this game.
It’s surprising to see the defenses perform like this, and the offenses look this out of sorts.
ASU’s offensive woes continue vs. Colorado
ASU had a short field on its next offensive possession, which started at the Colorado 45.
It didn’t matter.
The Sun Devils’ offensive woes continued as they went 3-and-out for a third straight possession.
ASU lost a yard on the possession.
Colorado has completely taken away ASU’s running game, including running back Cameron Skattebo, who has been so dynamic for the Sun Devils this season.
Skattebo has one carry for three yards in this game. The Sun Devils need a spark on offense.
ASU defense bringing heat on Shedeur Sanders, Colorado
Shedeur Sanders has been sacked a lot for Colorado this season.
It’s continuing in this game against Arizona State.
The Sun Devils have sacked Sanders three times in this game, the most recent on a 3rd-and-11 play at the Colorado 24, in which Sanders lost eight yards.
Colorado’s drive went just six plays in five yards.
We thought this game might be an offensive showcase. It has not played out that way so far.
ASU has 92 total yards. Colorado has 79.
ASU punts again after another 3-and-out vs. Colorado
The Sun Devils impressed on their first possession vs. Colorado, driving 66 yards for a touchdown.
They haven’t been able to do anything since.
ASU has gone 3-and-out on two straight possession vs. Colorado as the Sun Devils’ offense has suddenly struggled to get anything going.
Trenton Bourguet is 8-for-11 for 84 yards in the game, but he was 5-for-6 for 76 yards after Arizona State’s first possession.
With this explosive Colorado offense, ASU’s offense needs to stay on the field to allow its defense some time to rest (and keep the Buffaloes’ offense on the sideline). That has not happened for two straight possessions.
Colorado converts on 4th down to tie game vs. Arizona State
Colorado has tied the game with Arizona State after a 16-play, 75-yard drive that took 5:58 off the clock.
Xavier Weaver ran in for a 1-yard touchdown on a jet sweep on 4th-and-1 for the Buffaloes’ score, which fooled the ASU defense.
Colorado also went for it on 4th-and-8 at the ASU 29 earlier in the possession and Shedeur Sanders completed a 15-yard pass to Dylan Edwards for the first down.
Sanders is now 8-for-11 for 63 yards in the game.
The score was a pivotal one for the Buffaloes after they had not scored in the first quarter of their two previous games.
Score: Arizona State 7, Colorado 7 (2:03 left in first quarter)
ASU goes 3-and-out on second possession vs. Colorado
ASU couldn’t keep its early momentum going on offense on its second possession of the game.
The Sun Devils went 3-and-out, gaining just one yard on three plays, to give the ball back to Colorado.
Limiting penalties is going to be key for ASU and the Sun Devils were called for an illegal motion penalty on the possession.
ASU’s defense stops Colorado on Buffaloes’ first possession
Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders has thrown for 1,781 yards in five games this season.
He’s going to be very hard to try to contain for the Arizona State defense.
But it got off to a good start.
The Sun Devils forced Colorado to punt after a 3-play drive in which the Buffaloes lost 12 yards on their opening possession of the game on offense.
Sanders was sacked for a 12-yard loss on the drive. He was also called for intentional grounding. His only pass attempt went incomplete.
It’s only one possession, but it was a great possession on defense for ASU football.
ASU marches down field for touchdown vs. Colorado
Trenton Bourguet got the start for ASU football at quarterback again with Jaden Rashada and Drew Pyne out for the Sun Devils.
He got off to a good start against the Buffaloes.
Bourguet led ASU on a 9-play, 66-yard drive that took 4:29, scoring a touchdown on a 2-yard run to give ASU a 7-0 lead over Colorado.
Bourguet went 5-for-6 passing for 76 yards on the drive.
That was just the start ASU needed if it hopes to pull off an upset of the Buffaloes.
Could this game end up being a shootout? Colorado certainly has the offense, but the question entering the game was whether or not ASU could score enough points to hang with the Buffaloes.
It’s off to a good start.

The Buffaloes are -200 on the moneyline. The Sun Devils are +164.
The over/under for the game is set at 60.5 points.
