Scouting report on former Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman
The Wake Forest grad transfer went 36-21 as a starter, but just 5-10 against ranked teams. He overcame a broken leg (2018) and a blood clot (2022) to finish tied for third in FBS history in touchdown passes and fifth in passing yards. His arm strength and speed are only average, but his leadership, production and durability could have earned him a late-round draft slot. He struggled in the Senior Bowl (7-for-25 passing, 69 yards, one interception) but his lone season in a pro-style offense at Notre Dame yielded career-bests in completion percentage (63.5%), yards per attempt (8.9) and passer rating (159.5).
Sam Hartman highlights while at Notre Dame
Hartman went 2-2 in a month-long gauntlet against ranked teams last season, but the high point came in the Sept. 30 win at Duke. Coming off a last-second home loss to Ohio State, Hartman’s 17-yard scramble on fourth-and-16 kept alive the game-winning, 95-yard scoring drive. That marked the seventh time in Hartman’s career he had led his team to victory after being tied or trailing in the fourth quarter. His receiving corps depleted by injury, Hartman finished 15-for-30 passing for 222 yards in outlasting Duke QB Riley Leonard, who later followed him at Notre Dame as a transfer.
How did Sam Hartman do at the NFL Scouting Combine?
Ran a 4.80-second 40-yard dash that ranked second among the four QBs to run at the combine; his 9-1 broad jump and 28.5-inch vertical ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, out of the five QBs to test in those areas.
