India moved back to the top of the Cricket World Cup table with an exceptionally one-sided contest in Mumbai. Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first. They dismissed India’s captain, Rohit Sharma (4), with the second ball of the day but dropped the dangerous Virat Kohli (88) and Shubman Gill (92) who made them pay.

A partnership of over 100 set the perfect platform for the home side to set a high total and when both were dismissed quickly in didn’t stop India’s momentum. Shreyas Iyer came to the crease and blasted a quickfire 82 while Ravindra Jadeja made a cameo of 35 as India set Sri Lanka 358 runs to win.

They didn’t get close. Jasprit Bumrah took a wicket with the first ball of Sri Lanka’s reply and India never looked back. Mohammed Siraj (3-16) and Mohammed Shami (5-18) ran through the top order as Kusal Mendis’ side were bowled out inside 20 overs for just 55.

India have seven wins from seven and look on course to triumph in their home tournament once again.

India hammer woeful Sri Lanka to book place in World Cup knockout stages

15:38 , Mike Jones

India became the first team to qualify for the knockout stages of the Cricket World Cup with a thumping 302-run victory over Sri Lanka in Mumbai.

Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill put on 189 for India’s second wicket in their total of 357 for eight and Sri Lanka could only manage a sorry 55 all out in reply.

Mohammed Shami’s five for 18 made him India’s leading wicket-taker in 50-over World Cups, with the hosts securing their seventh win from as many matches.

Dilshan Madushanka bowled captain Rohit Sharma off only the second ball of the India innings but Sri Lankan cheers proved short-lived as Kohli and Gill piled on the runs.

Sri Lanka all out for 55, India win by 302 runs

15:29 , Mike Jones

India’s victory confirms a place for them in the final four today..

It’s the most important victory they’ve had and now they are a semi-final win away from reaching the final.

Sri Lanka all out for 55, India win by 302 runs

15:08 , Mike Jones

It’s a hammering.

India racked up a monster score of 357 thanks to half centuries from Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer before their fast bowlers ripped through Sri Lanka’s line-up.

Jasprit Bumrah took a wicket with his first ball, Mohammed Siraj claimed three, Mohammed Shami became India’s leading wicket taker in World Cups as his fiver-for takes him to 45 in total and Ravindra Jadeja ended the innings with one for himself.

WICKET! Dilshan Madushanka ct Shreyas Iyer b Ravindra Jadeja 5 (6), Sri Lanka 55 all out

15:05 , Mike Jones

That’s it.

Jadeja floats the ball up and lets Madushanka go after it. He swipes towards the legside but skews the ball straight into the air and Shreyas Iyer claims the catch.

Sri Lanka 55-9 (19.3), Madushanka 5, Theekshana 12, Jadeja 0-4 (0.3), target 358

15:03 , Mike Jones

Ravindra Jadeja is getting a bowl now that Mohammed Shami has his five wicket haul.

His first delivery is spanked away by Madushanka who picks up four runs. The Sri Lankans will prefere to face the two spinners, they can score off them…

Sri Lanka 51-9 (19), Madushanka 1, Theekshana 12, Kuldeep 0-3 (2), target 358

15:00 , Mike Jones

Sri Lanka get to fifty!

Theekshana works Kuldeep away for one and brings his team to a half century. Madushanka then gets off the mark with a nice push into the offside.

WICKET! Kasun Rajitha ct Shubman Gill b Mohammed Shami 14 (17), Sri Lanka 49-9 (18)

14:58 , Mike Jones

Got him!

Rajitha, perhaps confident from a couple of nice strokes earlier in the over, goes for the drive a nicks the ball to Shubman Gill at second slip.

Sri Lanka are on the brink.

Sri Lanka 49-8 (17.5), Rajitha 14, Theekshana 11, Shami 4-18 (4.5), target 358

14:56 , Mike Jones

It does seem to be getting easier to bat. Rajitha nails the ball away through cover for four more runs.

Shami is arriving wide on the crease and looking to angle the ball into the stumps. Rajitha is playing and missing at more than he hits but the ball is doing as much now and flies past the off stump.

A flick into the legside brings Rajitha two more…

Sri Lanka 43-8 (17), Rajitha 8, Theekshana 11, Kuldeep 0-1 (1), target 358

14:53 , Mike Jones

Rohit Sharma seems to have heard me.

Kuldeep Yadav is brought into the attack to try and tempt the batters into a loose shot. He’ll target the stumps and hope for a bit of spin back into the right-handers.

Rajitha manages to see out the first three balls before taking Kuldeep for a single.

Sri Lanka 42-8 (16), Rajitha 7, Theekshana 11, Shami 4-12 (4), target 358

14:50 , Mike Jones

One problem for India is that they’ve moved away from the consistent lines and lengths that have brought them eight wickets so far. Both bowlers are bowling shorter, trying to hurry the two batters.

This is why. A full ball from Shami is drilled down the gorund by Theekshana who collects four more. The Sri Lankans are waiting for anything in their arc so they can go after it.

Maybe it’s time for some spin?

Sri Lanka 37-8 (15), Rajitha 6, Theekshana 7, Siraj 3-16 (7), target 358

14:45 , Mike Jones

The runs will start to come now as the Sri Lankan batters have some fun. India need just two magic deliveries and the match is theirs though.

Rajitha pushes the ball away for one.

Siraj has a short leg in place and begins testing Theekshana with some short balls. The batter does well to keep away from the ball.

Sri Lanka 36-8 (14), Rajitha 5, Theekshana 7, Shami 4-7 (3), target 358

14:40 , Mike Jones

Kasun Rajitha is the new batter. He strides onto the front foot and drives Shami away for four!

There’s nothing to lose for the batters now, India are keeping the field up so there are runs to score if they beat the in-field. Shami wants a five-for though and push Rajitha into the crease. KL Rahul fumbles the ball and the batters sprint through for a bye.

A couple more singles bring Sri Lanka up to 36, one more run and they’ve avoided the lowest total in World Cup history.

WICKET! Angelo Mathews b Mohammed Shami 12 (25), Sri Lanka 29-8 (13.1)

14:35 , Mike Jones

Angelo Mathews looks to go over the top and hit the ball out of the ground but he misses a straight, full one. Shami hits, the stumps are knocked back and India are two wickets away from a spectacular win.

Sri Lanka 29-7 (13), Mathews 12, Theekshana 6, Siraj 3-15 (6), target 358

14:34 , Mike Jones

In this situation, Sri Lanka may as well play a few shots. Have some fun and try to take the sting out of India’s attack.

Doing just that, Theekshana drives one away through the offside and pick up four runs. He drives again and beats the in-field, the ball is reined in before it crosses the ropes though and this time it’s only two runs.

The Sri Lanka batters to come are going to have a bit of fun you feel.

Sri Lanka 22-7 (12), Mathews 11, Theekshana 0, Shami 3-1 (2), target 358

14:29 , Mike Jones

Mohammed Shami now has three wickets to his name as well. Maheesh Theekshana is the new batter and gets out of the over without too much trouble.

Sri Lanka may be bowled out for the lowest total in World Cup cricket. That record is currently held by Canada who scored 36 runs.

WICKET! Dushmantha Chameera ct KL Rahul b Mohammed Shami 0 (6), Sri Lanka 22-7

14:27 , Mike Jones

What a review!

Shami bangs a short ball into the pitch and aims it at the ribs of Chameera. He fends the ball away to the legside but looks to have missed it.

The umpire signals wide as KL Rahul leaps across to grab the ball. He tells Rohit Sharma to appeal and review and the replays show Chameera getting a tickle on the ball.

Sri Lanka are seven down.

Sri Lanka 22-6 (11.2), Mathews 11, Chameera 0, Shami 2-1 (1.2), target 358

14:25 , Mike Jones

Angelo Mathews’ eyes light up as Mohammed Shami bowls full. There’s a thick inside edge which takes the ball into the legside and allows Mathews to pick up a single…

Sri Lanka 21-6 (11), Mathews 10, Chameera 0, Siraj 3-8 (5), target 358

14:16 , Mike Jones

There’s going to be no let up for Sri Lanka. Angelo Mathews holds the key for them – not to win the game but to make this defeat less embarrasing.

Siraj is brought back into the attack, this time from the opposite end, and Mathews nudges him round the corner for a couple of runs.

Mathews gets off strike and Siraj gets one to jag back in to Chameera. The batter is beaten all ends up and the ball swings past KL Rahul, flying to the boundary for four byes.

Sri Lanka 14-6 (10), Mathews 7, Chameera 0, Shami 2-0 (1), target 358

14:10 , Mike Jones

Mohammed Shami’s hat-trick ball is delivered at Dushmantha Chameera but he’s confidently in behind the ball and defends it. Sri Lanka have been blown away here.

It’s a demolishing.

WICKET! Dushan Hemantha ct KL Rahul b Mohammed Shami 0 (1), Sri Lanka 14-6 (9.4)

14:08 , Mike Jones

Two in two!

Shami gets the ball to nip slightly away from Dushan Hemantha who pushes at it wide of the off stump. He nicks it through to KL Rahul behind the stumps and Shami is on a hat-trick.

WICKET! Charith Asalanka ct Ravindra Jadeja b Mohammed Shami 1 (24), Sri Lanka 14-5 (9.3)

14:06 , Mike Jones

As if things weren’t hard enough Mohammed Siraj is replaced with Mohammed Shami who has arguably been India’s best bowler of the tournament.

With Charith Asalanka on strike, Shami sends down a few balls outside the off stump. Asalanka can’t resist and drills a catch straight to Ravindra Jadeja at point.

Sri Lanka 14-4 (9), Mathews 7, Asalanka 1, Bumrah 1-8 (5), target 358

14:03 , Mike Jones

Jasprit Bumrah goes fuller as Angelo Mathews is hanging back in his crease. He draws the outside edge out of the batter but the ball flies down to third man for a single.

Asalanka finally gets off strike with a one.

Sri Lanka 12-4 (8), Mathews 6, Asalanka 0, Siraj 3-5 (4), target 358

13:57 , Mike Jones

Asalanka’s primary method of dealing with these two Indian bowlers is to defend, defend and defend. Siraj wants him to play more shots and gives the batter a death stare after he ducks under a bouncer.

Siraj sends down another maiden.

Sri Lanka 12-4 (7), Mathews 6, Asalanka 0, Bumrah 1-6 (4), target 358

13:54 , Mike Jones

Mathews finds a small gap on the offside and takes a couple of runs off Jasprit Bumrah. The swing seems to be getting less making batting easier for the Sri Lankans.

Bumrah is still on the money though beats the bat of Mathews who attempts to cut the ball away.

Sri Lanka 9-4 (6), Mathews 4, Asalanka 0, Siraj 3-5 (3), target 358

13:48 , Mike Jones

The intense almost feverish atmosphere of the first few overs is settling down though the Indian fans are chanting, singing and are very loud.

It’s a cauldron for the Sri Lanka batters. Mohammed Siraj tries to test Angelo Mathews with a bouncer and fizzes it down the legside.

A wide and a legbye are the only runs from the over.

Sri Lanka 7-4 (5), Mathews 4, Asalanka 0, Bumrah 1-3 (3), target 358

13:42 , Mike Jones

Jasprit Bumrah continues and decides to come around the wicket to the left-handed Asalanka. He lines up the ball really well and solidly gets in behind it.

Sri Lanka need to weather this storm and build a partnership but it’s going to be a long way back from this point.

Maiden for Bumrah.

Sri Lanka 7-4 (4), Mathews 4, Asalanka 0, Siraj 3-4 (2), target 358

13:38 , Mike Jones

Angelo Mathews comes to the crease with his team is dire straits. Sri Lanka are four down in the most testing of conditions and have a record total to chase down.

It does not get more difficult than this.

Siraj wraps Mathews on the thigh pad with his first ball. The batters are being pushed onto the back foot repeatedly even though Siraj isn’t bowling short.

Mathews leans into a nice push through midwicket and picks up the first boundary of the innings!

WICKET! Kusal Mendis b Mohammed Siraj 1 (10), Sri Lanka 3-4 (3.1)

13:32 , Mike Jones

What is happening?!

Mohammed Siraj goes slightly wider on the crease and gets the ball to nip back at Kusal Mendis. He plays down the wrong line, misses the ball and hears the worst sound in cricket as the stumps are dislodged.

Siraj has three!

Sri Lanka 3-3 (3), Mendis 1, Asalanka 0, Bumrah 1-3 (2), target 358

13:29 , Mike Jones

Not out! Hawkeye shows the ball is swinging wide of the leg stump and India lose a review. KL Rahul told Rohot that was going to be the case and he’s justified.

Kusal Mendis becomes the first batter to get off the mark with a flick to fine leg for one.

Sri Lanka 2-3 (2.3), Mendis 0, Asalanka 0, Bumrah 1-2 (1.3), target 358

13:27 , Mike Jones

Kusal Mendis stays on the back foot to give himself the most time to watch the swing. He dabs the ball into the ground and it almost bounces back onto his own stumps.

Bumrah’s third ball in the over swings sharply back into the batter and hits him on the pads. India appeal but they’re turned away by the umpire.

Rohit Sharma sends it upstairs…

Sri Lanka 2-3 (2), Mendis 0, Asalanka 0, Siraj 2-0 (1), target 358

13:25 , Mike Jones

Charith Asalanka is now at the crease and sees out the over. Sri Lanka have lost three wickets in two overs. This match could be over very quickly if they’re not careful.

WICKET! Sadeera Samarawickrama ct Shreyas Iyer b Mohammed Siraj 0 (4), Sri Lanka 2-3 (1.5)

13:23 , Mike Jones

Got him this time!

Siraj bowls a good length delivery slightly wider and tempts Sadeera into swiping at the ball. Rohit Sharma has put a third slip in place and Shreyas Iyer clings onto the catch.

Sri Lanka are three down!

Sri Lanka 2-2 (1.4), Mendis 0, Sadeera 0, Siraj 1-0 (0.4), target 358

13:22 , Mike Jones

Sadeera Samarawickrama is the new batter for Sri Lanka. He’s been one of the best parts of their World Cup campaign and they’ll need him to perform.

Oh my days! Sadeera is given out caught behind as he looks to push at the ball. He reviews it immediately and the technology shows that he hit the floor not the ball.

Sri Lanka have a reprieve but India are firing on all cylinders. This is a true test for the batters, the bowling is of the highest quality…

WICKET! Dimuth Karunaratne lbw Mohammed Siraj 0 (1), Sri Lanka 2-2 (1.1)

13:17 , Mike Jones

India are on fire!

Dimuth Karunaratne is trapped bang in front of the stumps by a relatively simple delivery from Mohammed Siraj. It’s just a straight one that the opener plays all around.

Sri Lanka lose their second wicket in as many overs.

Sri Lanka 2-1 (1), Mendis 0, Karunaratne 0, Bumrah 1-2 (1), target 358

13:14 , Mike Jones

The new batter is Sri Lanka’s captain Kusal Mendis. His first couple of deliveries are flung down the legside by Jasprit Bumrah who is getting the ball to swing both ways already.

An already difficult task will become almost impossible if the ball starts to move.

Bumrah angles the ball into the batter and gets it to swing away again. It’s almost a repeat of the wicket ball but Mendis gets some bat on it. He chips the ball over the bowler and is almost caught.

What an over this has been.

WICKET! Pathum Nissanka lbw Jasprit Bumrah 0 (1), Sri Lanka 0-1 (0.1)

13:09 , Mike Jones

What a start!

Jasprit Bumrah angles the ball back into the pads of Pathum Nissanka who misses it and is struck on the pads. The batter reviews but hawkeye shows three reds and he has to go.

Wonderful stuff from India.

Start of innings: Sri Lanka 0-0 (0), Nissanka 0, Karunaratne 0, Bumrah 0-0 (0), target 358

13:07 , Mike Jones

Sri Lanka need to chase down a record total if they want to win this game and keep their hopes of a semi-final place in tact. Jasprit Bumrah will open the bowling for India with a couple of slips in place.

Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne are opening the batting. Here comes the first ball…

India 357-8, Sri Lanka require 358 runs to win

13:00 , Mike Jones

Dilshan Madushanka’s figures of 5-80, is the most expensive five-wicket haul in World Cup history. He took a bit of tap in the final over from Shreyas Iyer but without his wickets, India could have notched up an even bigger total.

Why Sri Lanka players are wearing black armbands in Cricket World Cup match against India

12:55 , Mike Jones

The Sri Lanka team wore black armbands during their Cricket World Cup match against India as a tribute to Percy Abeysekera, their legendary ‘super fan’, who passed away a few days ago.

Abeysekera, fondly known as ‘Uncle Percy’, passed away after a prolonged battle with illness at the age of 87. He was an integral part of cricket in Sri Lanka and played a vital role from the stands to motivate the Sri Lankan players for nearly three decades.

“Sri Lanka players will wear black armbands during today’s game vs India to pay tribute to the late Percy Abeysekera, the legendary cheerleader,” Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in an official statement posted on Twitter/X.

Shubman Gill stands on the brink of becoming India’s next cricketing superstar

12:50 , Mike Jones

The stage is set, the Indian nation expects, and the pressure is on India to deliver one of the most coveted trophies in the world of sport, the ICC Cricket World Cup. For 24-year-old Shubman Gill, there is no bigger platform on which to lay down his marker as the future of Indian cricket after recovering from dengue, having missed the first two matches against Australia and Afghanistan.

Unlike England where cricket is secondary to football in terms of interest and profile, in India cricket is paramount. The top cricketers can have social media followers in the hundreds of millions – for example, Virat Kohli has 260m followers on Instagram – and their faces adorn billboards while featuring in TV adverts is also a part of the status.

Gill has already impressed in the format and goes into the tournament as the leading run scorer in ODI cricket this calendar year, but it is the performances in the international events that live longest in the memory.

End of innings: India 357-8, Sri Lanka require 358 runs to win

12:40 , Mike Jones

It’s a powerful total for India who have command of this game at the halfway stage. Fifties for Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer helped the hosts to 357-8 across the 50 overs.

The only resistance came from Dilshan Madushanka who took a five-wicket haul and claimed wickets throughout the innings to try and add some pressure onto the Indian team.

Sri Lanka found it difficult though and they’ll need to knock off a record total if they want to win this game.

WICKET! Ravindra Jadeja run out Sadeera Samarawickrama 35 (23), India 357-8 (50)

12:36 , Mike Jones

The final ball of the innings is flicked over to the legside. Ravindra Jadeja calls Jasprit Bumrah through for a second by he’s short of his ground on the second run and is dismissed.

India finish their innings with 357-8.

WICKET! Mohammed Shami run out Kusal Mendis 2 (4), India 355-7 (49.3)

12:33 , Mike Jones

A slower ball does for Shami who swings and misses. Jadeja wants to run to the wicketkeeper and Shami leaves his ground. Mendis throws down the stumps and India lose a seventh wicket.

India 355-6 (49.2), Jadeja 31, Shami 2, Rajitha 0-60 (8.2)

12:31 , Mike Jones

Sri Lanka are going to need to chase down a record total in their ODI history if they are to win this game.

Kasun Rajitha will bowl the final six deliveries and Ravindra Jadeja takes three from the first couple.

India 352-6 (49), Jadeja 31, Shami 2, Chameera 1-71 (10)

12:28 , Mike Jones

Chameera will bowl the penultimate over and he’s met with a ramp shot from Jadeja who picks up four runs from the first delivery. Next up he takes a single to bring Shami on strike.

Shami attempts to flick the ball into the legside but a leading edge lands same at cover and he runs through for one more.

Six! Jadeja stands and delivers with a powerful stroke over long on and fires another maximum into the stands. India are ending the innings well here.

13 from the over.

India 339-6 (48), Jadeja 19, Shami 1, Madushanka 5-80 (10)

12:24 , Mike Jones

Madushanka has a five-wicket haul and becomes the fourth Sri Lanka to do so in a World Cup match. He’s kept his team in the contest although India have notched up a huge total and the innings isn’t yet over.

At one stage they were on course to record near 400 which now seems unlikely.

WICKET! Shreyas Iyer ct Maheesh Theekshana b Dilshan Madushanka 82 (56), India 332-6 (47.3)

12:21 , Mike Jones

Got him!

Madushanka decides to come over the wicket. He angles a slower ball across Shreyas who lifts it straight up into the air. Theekshana clings onto the catch and the dangerman is out.

India 332-5 (47.2), Jadeja 14, Shreyas 82, Madushanka 4-73 (9.2)

12:20 , Mike Jones

Dilshan Madushanka is going to bowl out his allotment now.

His re-introduction into the attack is met with a lovely pull shot from Shreyas Iyer who mullers a pull shot over the legside for six!

He goes again but this time down the ground and the result is the same. Shreyas is unleashing…

India 320-5 (47), Jadeja 14, Shreyas 70, Chameera 1-58 (9)

12:16 , Mike Jones

Chameera will probably bowl this over and then get replaced by Madushanka for the last one at this end. Shreyas Iyer decides to go after him and takes two from the first ball before guiding a full toss away for four!

A slower ball next up is a fine response from the bowler and forces a loose shot out of Shreyas. Three more come from his bat bringing nine runs from the over before Jadeja takes a couple off the final ball.

India 309-5 (46), Jadeja 12, Shreyas 61, Rajitha 0-60 (8)

12:12 , Mike Jones

What can India finish on here? They’ll want to get close to and above 350 but that means going at 10 runs an over from here on out.

Rajitha is brought back into the attack. His return yields just five runs in what is a good over for Sri Lanka. The total is still within the range that they could potentially chase down.

They need to finish the innings off well.

India 304-5 (45), Jadeja 10, Shreyas 59, Theekshana 0-67 (10)

12:07 , Mike Jones

Wonderful fielding at backward point stops a cut shot from Shreyas Iyer going to the boundary. He only manages to collect one but that brings Jadeja on strike.

The all-rounder takes one more as Shreyas looks to take on the spinner. Theekshana is darting the ball into Shreyas’ feet and concedes another single.

I don’t think Jadeja has played an aggressive stroke yet, he’s leaving things to Shreyas who gets lucky. He misses a full length ball which also does for Kusal Mendis. The ball flies past the wicketkeeper and runs away for four to bring up India’s 300.

India 295-5 (44), Jadeja 8, Shreyas 56, Madushanka 4-61 (9)

12:03 , Mike Jones

Madushanka has been Sri Lanka’s best bowler today. He’s given it his all and has taken crucial wickets at the right moments. The left armer has one left after this over but he’s keeping the batters quiet.

Six singles and a wide come from the over.

India 288-5 (43), Jadeja 5, Shreyas 53, Theekshana 0-62 (9)

11:57 , Mike Jones

Jadeja is quick between the wickets and helps Shreyas to a couple of runs after he tips the ball into the legside. A fine cut from Shreyas brings him four more and takes him to a well earned fifty!

India take nine runs from the over.

India 279-5 (42), Jadeja 3, Shreyas 45, Madushanka 4-54 (8)

11:55 , Mike Jones

Ravindra Jadeja comes to the crease for India and picks up three runs off the last three deliveries of Madushanka’s eighth over. The left-arm seamer has moved to the top of the wicket taking table for the tournament now.

He’s got 17 across the competition.

WICKET! Suryakumar Yadav ct Kusal Mendis b Dilshan Madushanka 12 (9), India 276-5 (41.3)

11:52 , Mike Jones

Great review from Sri Lanka.

Madushanka is brough back into the attack and tests Suryakumar with a short ball. He takes on the hook shot and there’s a little noise.

The umpire initally says not out as Sri Lanka appeal for caught behind but on review there’s a faint line on ultra edge meaning the batter has to depart.

India 274-4 (41), Suryakumar 11, Shreyas 45, Theekshana 0-53 (8)

11:46 , Mike Jones

Okay, into the last 10 overs now. Sri Lanka are allowed to send a fifth fielder to cover the boundary as India will look to completely tee off.

Shreyas turns the ball away for one before Suryakumar pushes the ball into the legside for two more. Another single brings Shreyas back on strike and he goes big.

A full blooded swing of the bat sends the ball 89m into the stands of a maximum!

India 264-4 (40), Suryakumar 8, Shreyas 38, Chameera 1-47 (8)

11:42 , Mike Jones

Suryakumar Yadav is the new batter and he doesn’t know the meaning of defence either. His primary motivation is to attack the bowling and gets off the mark with a lovely drive down the ground for four runs.

Sri Lanka decide to review a decision from the umpire after they appeal for a caught behind. It doesn’t look as though Suryakumar has hit the ball and ultra edge proves that to be the case.

The last ball of the over is nailed straight down the ground again and that’s two boundaries in the over for Suryakumar.

WICKET! KL Rahul ct Dushan Hemantha b Dushmantha Chameera 21(18), India 256-4 (39.2)

11:38 , Mike Jones

Another blow for India.

KL Rahul looks to drive and drills the ball into the air to the fielder at cover. Chameera has a deserved wicket but the hosts are still well set to attack the final stage of the innings.

India 255-3 (39), Rahul 21, Shreyas 37, Theekshana 0-43 (7)

India’s 250 comes up thanks to a couple of singles from the first two deliveries of Theekshana’s seventh over. Shreyas mullers a flat-batted shot down the ground but only picks up another one.

Four runs come from the first four balls before Shreyas ramps one down to fine leg and collects a couple. A single keeps Shreyas on strike for the final over before the next powerplay.

India 248-3 (38), Rahul 19, Shreyas 32, Chameera 0-38 (7)

11:30 , Mike Jones

Here’s Dushmantha Chameera. The right-arm seamer starts well. He targets the off stump against KL Rahul who pushes him away for a single.

Shreyas Iyer is more aggressive and finds a thick outside edge that should be taken. Kusal Mendis leaps across to his right and just misses the ball which flies down to the boundary for four!

A single for Shreyas brings up the fifty partnership between these two.

India 240-3 (37), Rahul 17, Shreyas 27, Theekshana 0-36 (6)

11:25 , Mike Jones

Eight runs an over from this point brings India over 350. They could easily reach that and potentially more if this partnership continues the way it is.

Theekshana is back on for a bowl and starts well. Rahul takes him for one but Shreyas can’t beat the field from the next four deliveries.

The spinner is darting the ball into the stumps and the extra pace is making Shreyas think. Just the one run comes from the six balls. Good over for Sri Lanka.

India 239-3 (36), Rahul 16, Shreyas 27, Rajitha 0-56 (7)

11:22 , Mike Jones

Oh. Those two wickets don’t seem to have done much to halt India’s progress. If anything, Shreyas Iyer is upping the run rate again.

KL Rahul works the ball away for four before rotating the strike, Shreyas then goes down the ground for his third six of the innings. Two singles and a wide follow to make it 14 runs from the over.

India 225-3 (35), Rahul 10, Shreyas 20, Hemantha 0-52 (7)

11:17 , Mike Jones

KL Rahul is a settling presence in the middle order and will not be phased by the situation of the game. He’ll get himself in and then look to advance the score quickly.

Hemantha continues and the batters pick the gaps beautifully. Five singles come from the first five balls before a floaty delivery from the spinner is nailed into the stands for six by Shreyas Iyer!

India 214-3 (34), Rahul 7, Shreyas 12, Rajitha 0-42 (6)

11:13 , Mike Jones

The pressure is eased. Every time Rajitha has come into the attack his first ball has been poor. It’s the same here and Rahul turns him around the corner for four!

A single takes him up the other end of the pitch.

Bang! Shreyas goes after a delivery that’s right in his arc, he belts it down the ground with the field up and dispatches the ball over the ropes.

India 201-3 (33), Rahul 2, Shreyas 4, Hemantha 0-41 (7)

11:08 , Mike Jones

It won’t be easy to start an innings for Rahul or Shreyas and if Sri Lanka can rattle through a few overs of spin, the pressure will continue to mount.

India have a decent platform though and a single from Shreyas brings up the 200.

India 199-3 (32), Rahul 1, Shreyas 3, Madushanka 3-49 (7)

11:06 , Mike Jones

KL Rahul is the new batter for India and immediately gets off the strike. Three runs come from the rest of the over but Sri Lanka have changed the outlook of the innings.

The wickets of Kohli and Gill came at the perfect time for them and now they need to strangle India, increase the pressure on the new batters and slow the run rate right down.

WICKET! Virat Kohli ct Pathum Nissanka b Dilshan Madushanka 88 (94), India 196-3 (31.3)

11:03 , Mike Jones

Got him!

That’s a huge wicket for Sri Lanka as Virat Kohli has to depart. A slower ball from Dilshan Madushanka sticks in the wicket. Kohli checks his attempted drive and chips the ball to cover where Pathum Nissanka takes the catch.

India 196-2 (31.2), Kohli 88, Shreyas 2, Madushanka 2-46 (6.2)

11:01 , Mike Jones

Shreyas turns a short ball from Madushanka into the legside for one to keep up his 100 strike rate. It won’t be long before he starts to open up with some more aggressive strokes…

India 195-2 (31), Kohli 88, Shreyas 1, Hemantha 0-39 (6)

10:59 , Mike Jones

Dushan Hemantha should look to keep it tight now. Virat Kohli is the type of batter that will look to stay in until the end of the innings. Shreyas Iyer is just starting his knock and will need some time to get settled.

Sri Lanka need to build some pressure now. Hemantha does well, conceding just two from the over.

WICKET! Shubman Gill ct Kusal Mendis b Dilshan Madushanka 92 (92), India 193-2 (30)

10:54 , Mike Jones

There’s the breakthrough!

Another short ball is banged into the wicket and Shubman Gill leans onto the back foot looking to lift it over the wicket keeper. He gets a thin edge to the ball and slides it through to Kusal Mendis who clings onto the catch.

Sri Lanka have their second wicket.

India 193-1 (29.5), Kohli 87, Gill 92, Madushanka 1-45 (5.5)

10:53 , Mike Jones

Shubman Gill is so quick onto the pull shot that there is no margin for error for the bowler. Madushanka struggles to find his line and length on his return and a shortish delivery is whipped away for four.

Gill follows it up with a couple more and eight runs have come from the over already…

India 185-1 (29), Kohli 86, Gill 86, Hemantha 0-37 (5)

10:47 , Mike Jones

Virat Kohli is content with working the ball away and rotating the strike. Shubman Gill is the aggressor. He dances down the track to Dushan Hemantha and drives him back over his head for another six runs!

Incredible batting.

The rest of the over brings a couple of runs before Gill beats the field with a late cut off the last ball to pick up four more. 13 from that over.

India 172-1 (28), Kohli 84, Gill 75, Chameera 0-31 (6)

10:43 , Mike Jones

Maximum! Chameera tries a short ball at Gill who thanks him for it and smokes a pull shot over the legside for the first six of the innings.

Smartly Gill gets off strike with the next delivery and Kohli ends the over with a single.

India 164-1 (27), Kohli 83, Gill 68, Theekshana 0-35 (5)

10:38 , Mike Jones

Things are looking a bit bleak for Sri Lanka who really need to break this partnership. Currently, India are projected to score close to 400 in this innings which would be a mammoth total to chase down.

Kohli works Theekshana away for one bringing Gill on strike. He drops low and powerfully sweeps the spinner away to the boundary but only collects one himself.

It’s a good over for Sri Lanka with just two coming from it.

India 162-1 (26), Kohli 82, Gill 67, Chameera 0-23 (5)

10:34 , Mike Jones

India are well set at the halfway stage of the innings. The next 15 overs will be key for them though as they’ll look to increase the tempo and potentially double the current score.

Chameera continues but Kohli shuffles down the wicket, turns his wrists over the ball and whips it away for four runs.

Two singles follow before a drive on the up from Kohli sees him ping the ball through extra-cover. It’s decent work on the boundary edge to save a couple of runs but there’s a misfield as the ball comes back to the bowler so Kohli sprints back for a third.

Runs are scored from every ball and another 11 come from the over.

India 151-1 (25), Kohli 73, Gill 65, Theekshana 0-33 (4)

10:29 , Mike Jones

Virat Kohli is waiting for the loose deliveries. Sri Lanka have been disciplined over the last few overs but a short, wide ball from Maheesh Theekshana is dispatched away for four runs!

Kohli gets off strike and Shubman Gill picks up where he left off. Another square cut brings Gill four as well.

This is a big over for India, 11 runs coming from it.

India 140-1 (24), Kohli 67, Gill 60, Chameera 0-12 (4)

10:25 , Mike Jones

Dushmantha Chameera has had a few issues with his right shoulder today but he’s okay to bowl again. The seamer hits a good length right off the bat and targets a line just outside off stump.

Gill picks up one, Kohli tries to be aggressive but hits the field with a couple of shots so decides to get off strike with a push into the gap on the offside.

A slower ball from Chameera sees Gill lift the ball over point and call Kohli through for one more.

Four runs come from the over as Kohli sprints through for one more off the last ball.

India 136-1 (23), Kohli 65, Gill 58, Theekshana 0-22 (3)

10:19 , Mike Jones

Kusal Mendis continues to rotate his bowlers and search for wickets. Theekshana comes back on and flicks a wrong ‘un out the back of his hand.

It bounces slightly lower than Kohli expects and he misses out on an attempted square drive.

Kohli and Gill continue to score though and take four singles from the over.

India 132-1 (22), Kohli 63, Gill 56, Rajitha 0-29 (5)

10:16 , Mike Jones

India scored 60 runs for one wicket off the first 10 overs and 60 runs for no wickets off the next 10. They’re setting the platform for a massive onslaught later in the innings.

Shubman Gill pushes the ball to mid on and takes one. Kohli targets the same spot but nails it harder, beating the fielder and picking up four runs.

The partnership is now up to 128 runs.

India 126-1 (21), Kohli 58, Gill 55, Hemantha 0-24 (4)

10:12 , Mike Jones

Dushan Hemantha is desperately trying to get a bit of rhythm but it’s not easy against two set and excellent batters. There’s also not much spin for him at the minute.

A back foot punch from the last delivery brings Kohli a couple more and six come from the over. It’s very easy batting for now, Sri Lanka need a wicket.

India 120-1 (20), Kohli 54, Gill 53, Rajitha 0-23 (4)

10:09 , Mike Jones

Virat Kohli knocks the ball to mid on and sprints through for one. He knows that if he sets off immediately he can make it to the other side of the wicket before the throw comes in.

Rajitha keeps things tight for the rest of the over with Shubman Gill unable to beat the in-field. Just the one run comes from the over.

India 119-1 (19), Kohli 53, Gill 53, Hemantha 0-18 (3)

10:05 , Mike Jones

There’s been a couple of simple misfields from Sri Lanka which give India confidence that they can keep running quick singles. Shubman Gill turns down the run this time as he fancies taking Hemantha on.

The power comes from his bottom hand as he whacks the spinner back down the ground. The pace of the shot sees the ball fly down to the boundary and Gill gets four, bringing up his half-century too!

Great batting.

India 113-1 (18), Kohli 52, Gill 48, Rajitha 0-22 (3)

10:01 , Mike Jones

Shubman Gill seems to have decided that the time is right to play a few shots. As Kasun Rajitha comes back into the attack, Gill laces onto a wide ball and nails it to the backward point boundary for four.

He then goes aerial and miscues a lofted drive but manages to pick the gap and collect two more. When Kohli is brought back on strike, he sees out the rest of the over without too much trouble.

India 106-1 (17), Kohli 52, Gill 41, Hemantha 0-12 (2)

09:57 , Mike Jones

100 up for India! Dushan Hemantha over strides the mark and bowls a no ball as Virat Kohli works him away to the legside for a couple of runs.

The next delivery is a free hit and Kohli whips the ball over to deep midwicket boundary. He calls Gill back for a second run and brings up a very fine half-century.

Four singles come from the rest of the over, nine in total and there was very little risk there.

India 97-1 (16), Kohli 46, Gill 39, Madushanka 1-37 (5)

09:53 , Mike Jones

Oh my! Madushanka aims for the stumps and Kohli goes down the ground. He steps to the ball and whacks it past the bowler, drilling it quickly along the deck for four runs.

Kohli then turns the ball into the legside for one.

Bang! Shubman Gill dances down the track and unleashes on a short ball, nailing over cover for a boundary! What a shot. These Indian batters seem very settled now.

Class from Kohli, power from Gill.

India 88-1 (15), Kohli 41, Gill 35, Hemantha 0-3 (1)

09:49 , Mike Jones

It’s time for another spin option as Dushan Hemantha is introduced to have a bowl. His first ball is short and wide allowing Virat Kohli to spank the leg spinner away to the offside boundary. There’s cover there though and it only brings a single.

Close! After Shubman Gill gets off strike, Hemantha gets one to grip and spin past the outside of Kohli’s bat as he feels of the ball. The Sri Lankans where interested for a while but it’s perfectly played as the ball missing the outside edge.

Three runs come from the over.

India 85-1 (14), Kohli 39, Gill 34, Madushanka 1-28 (4)

09:41 , Mike Jones

Kusal Mendis brings the wicket-taker, Dilshan Madushanka, back into the attack as Sri Lanka go in search of wickets. The left-arm seamer has a slightly slingy action and will bring the ball into the right-handed batters pads.

Virat Kohli pushes the ball to mid off and scrambles through for a tight single. Gill is hit on the pads bringing a soft but not serious appeal out of the bowler as it is clear the ball is missing leg stump.

Two more singles come from the rest of the over. Decent return for the bowler.

India 82-1 (13), Kohli 37, Gill 33, Theekshana 0-18 (2)

09:38 , Mike Jones

The gentle offspin of Theekshana doesn’t seem to be troubling the batters at the minute but he’s keeping his lines just hovering around the off stump making it tricky to work the ball away to the boundary.

A few of singles come from the first three deliveries before Theekshana straightens his line and is flicked away to the backward square leg boundary for four!

Two more come from the last ball and, including a wide earlier in the over, that’s 10 runs more runs for India.

India 72-1 (12), Kohli 35, Gill 26, Mathews 0-11 (3)

09:32 , Mike Jones

Shubman Gill nails a cut shot but finds the fielder on the boundary and only gets one. A misfield at midwicket then allows Kohli to call Gill through for another single.

The batters are milking Mathews for runs. They recognise that he is one of the more dangerous bowlers so are taking no risks against him.

Four runs come from the over.

India 68-1 (11), Kohli 34, Gill 24, Theekshana 0-8 (1)

09:28 , Mike Jones

Time for a bit of spin as Maheesh Theekshana is brought into the attack. He’s very full with his first delivery and slightly wide of the off stump. Virat Kohli whips his wrists over the ball and drills a drive down the ground, beating the fielder at long off and bringing himself four.

The batters then rotate the strike from the next four balls and take eight from the over. Sri Lanka need to get a grip on this partnership or else it will start to take the game away from them.

India 60-1 (10), Kohli 28, Gill 22, Mathews 0-8 (2)

09:23 , Mike Jones

Mathews continues and so does Kohli. He turns the ball into midwicket and takes one. Gill then gives the strike back to him with a push to the fielder at wide mid on.

There’s a hint of swing away from the batter and Kohli dangles his bat out wide. The ball passes the edge and gets the bowler excited for half a moment.

Kohli plays the next delivery late and pushes it into the gap at point for one more. 10 overs gone, India are flying at six runs per over.

India 57-1 (9), Kohli 26, Gill 21, Rajitha 0-15 (2)

09:20 , Mike Jones

India bring up their 50! Rajitha targets a leg stump line when bowling at Gill and pins the opener on the thigh pad. The pace of the delivery carries the ball down to fine leg and brings four leg byes.

Crunch! When the bowler pulls his length back slightly, Gill punches a square drive through the offside and adds four more to the total. That’s a lovely shot.

The Indian batters are strong through the legside and every time Rajitha aims for the pads the ball is whipped away. Gill takes two more from the last ball.

India have rallied brilliantly since Rohit’s early wicket.

India 47-1 (8), Kohli 26, Gill 15, Mathews 0-5 (1)

09:16 , Mike Jones

Throughout the tournament Angelo Mathews has been a go-to for Sri Lanka. He’s kept things under control and taken wickets in the middle of the innings.

Kusal Mendis turns to him now in an attempt to break this partnership.

Shubman Gill is in now hurry though. A couple of fine forward defensive strokes gives him a look at the bowling before he leans onto the back foot and cuts the ball away for four!

He eases the final ball of the over into the legside and scrambles through for one to keep the strike.

India 42-1 (7), Kohli 26, Gill 10, Rajitha 0-9 (1)

09:12 , Mike Jones

Kasun Rajitha is brought into the attack for Sri Lanka and starts off pretty well. He keeps it tight to Shubman Gill and only allows the opener a single from the first three deliveries.

Four! The ball is pinging off the middle of Kohli’s bat. He drives down the ground and collects another boundary with a wonderful stroke.

Another one! Rajitha overcorrects his line and angles the ball down the legside, Kohli flicks it away to fine leg for consecutive boundaries.

India’s talisman looks in dangerous form today.

India 33-1 (6), Kohli 18, Gill 9, Chameera 0-8 (3)

09:08 , Mike Jones

Rohit Sharma’s dismissal hasn’t stopped India from getting off to a good start. Virat Kohli has come in at three and is playing his shots.

A couple of expansive drives brings him two boundaries in the over from Dushmantha Chameera but there was an inside edge that Kusal Mendis spilled behind the stumps.

Kohli is riding his luck and when it’s with him, he usually goes big.

WICKET! Rohit Sharma b Madushanka 4 (2)

08:57 , Jack Rathborn

A tremendous delivery from Madushanka! Full and on a fine line, the left-arm seamer forces Rohit to play back in his crease and that’s an edge that clatters into his off stump.

The new ball doing the trick for Sri Lanka and that is an absolute beauty first up, what a moment.

Madushanka will want to frame that one. We have a game!

Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis wins the toss and opts to bowl first
