Japan aims to host an Asian version of the Grammy Awards, celebrating Asian artists and elevating global entertainment.
The Cultural Affairs Agency is considering the launch of an award ceremony, akin to the Grammy Awards, to honor Asian artists.
The Grammy Awards, also known as the Grammys, began in 1959 and are held yearly in Los Angeles, California. The award ceremony receives a great deal of attention, along with widespread viewers from around the world.
The Grammys is currently the largest music awards ceremony in the United States, attracting over 12.55 million viewers last year.
The agency would hold the ceremony in Kyoto, where the company is set to relocate its headquarters next March. The ceremony would begin as early as 2025.
The hope for this event is to shine a spotlight on talented Asian artists, allowing them to gain recognition in the global market. Concurrently, the company is committed to fostering the growth of Japan’s music and film industry on a global scale.
This potential award ceremony could serve as a starting point for growth and pave the way for future endeavors.
Up to this point, mainstream Asian music has come mostly from K-pop and groups like BTS. Essentially, the Asian entertainment market has been dominated by Korean pop music, leaving little room for other areas and genres on a global scale.
Japan currently has a large domestic market for entertainment but would like to expand globally to reach a larger audience. With that said, holding the award ceremony in Japan would not only attract a widespread audience but also introduce more individuals to Japanese Pop.
The announcement of this potential awards ceremony received lots of feedback from viewers.
Ultimately, as mentioned, the ceremony hopes to honor Asian artists. Some, however, saw it as an advantage for the rich to get richer and for the larger groups to continue to dominate.
