In a recent interview I sat down with Allen Arthur, known as Bizkit, and Keith Justice, also known as Butta where the GRAMMY-nominated music producers opened up to me about their extensive careers in the music industry, their multi-level foray into the film industry, along with the importance of mental health. The Duo made their foray into acting, music direction, and soundtrack creation via the feature film “Lovers and Friends” written and directed by, in alphabetical order, Brandon Morson and Kenny Pettis Jr. now streaming on Tubi. The long-running creative team acted as music directors, Butta added Foley artist to his arsenal, and the pair are responsible for the motion picture’s soundtrack as well which is available now.
Music Industry Success
Bizkit and Butta have established themselves as significant figures in the music industry, contributing to projects with high-profile artists such as John Legend and Miguel. The duo earned several GRAMMY nominations, though they frequently found themselves competing with the likes of Frank Ocean. They also received recognition at the Soul Train Awards, winning the Ashford and Simpson Songwriters Award for John Legend’s hit “Best You Ever Had.”
Mental Health and Hiatus
After years of intense work in the music industry, including an eight-year stint touring with John Legend, Bizkit took a break for mental health reasons. He emphasized the importance of this pause, citing the need for creative rejuvenation and personal well-being.
Transition to Acting and Film Scoring and Soundtracks
Bizkit recently made his acting debut in the film “Lovers and Friends“. The movie, which features a soundtrack entirely composed and produced by Bizkit and Butta, follows the story of a musician struggling to finish his album after a challenging breakup. The opportunity to star in the film arose serendipitously at a party, where Bizkit successfully pitched himself for the role. This film marks a significant step in the duo’s career as they transition from music to film production.
Soundtrack and Film Scoring
The “Lovers and Friends” soundtrack showcases Bizkit and Butta’s musical versatility. The duo took on the roles of both composers and music directors, carefully selecting tracks that enhance the film’s emotional impact. The soundtrack is available on all streaming services, adding another dimension to their creative portfolio.
Creative Process and Industry Insight
Bizkit describes their musical style as “bipolar,” reflecting the wide range of emotions and genres they cover. The duo stressed the importance of understanding an artist’s identity to produce authentic music that resonates with both the artist and their audience. They continue to expand their creative horizons, with plans to explore more opportunities in the film industry.
Bottom Line
We had a lot of fun with this interview which offers a comprehensive look into the careers of Bizkit and Butta, highlighting their achievements in music, their mindful approach to mental health, and their exciting transition into the world of film. The duo remains committed to pushing the boundaries of their creativity while staying true to their artistic roots.
