The heat is back, again.
Monday’s high in Sacramento is expected to be 97 degrees, with Tuesday up to around 103. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the region south into Modesto, and an excessive heat warning for areas north of Yuba City starting Tuesday and ending Wednesday night.

“Temperatures are going to be unseasonably hot for a good portion of the valley,” said Sara Purdue, a meteorologist with the weather service in Sacramento. “In the part of the valley north of Yuba City we’re looking at temperatures that are up to 20 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year.”
Forecasters are warning of increased risk for heat-related illnesses through Wednesday for anyone without air conditioning as well as for pets and livestock. They also recommend doing outdoor activities earlier in the day, as the hours of 4 to 7 p.m. are typically the hottest period of time.
They also caution that rivers are continuing to run cold and fast due to snowmelt. They advise anyone on the water to wear a life vest, avoid alcohol and keep a close eye on children and pets.
Despite the heat, Purdue said gusty conditions that can help spread wildfire are not expected.
“Winds, generally through the end of the week, will be fairly calm,” she said. “We are looking at a potential wind event over the weekend but for this week it should generally be fairly calm winds.”
Highs are forecast to be back in the upper 80s to low 90s by Thursday.
“After Wednesday evening starting Thursday, things will start to cool off a little bit more as the Delta starts to influence the valley more,” Perdue said. “Temperatures are still going to be above normal, but they’ll be not quite so hot, not in the hundreds anymore.”
This latest heat wave closely follows two others that hit the Sacramento region over the past two weeks as we move closer to the official first day of summer on June 20.
Cooling centers open in Sacramento County
Sacramento County is opening cooling centers starting Tuesday at four locations. Where allowed, pets must be on a leash or contained in an animal carrier at all times:
- North A Emergency Shelter, 1400 North A Street, Sacramento. Open June 11-12 from 1-10 p.m. Limited capacity for pets.
- Outreach and Engagement Center, 3615 Auburn Blvd. Open from June 11 at noon through June 13 at 8 a.m.
- Sam and Bonnie Pannell Center, 2450 Meadowview Road. Open June 11-12 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Citrus Heights Police Department, 6315 Fountain Square Drive, Citrus Heights. Lobby will be open until 8 p.m. on June 11. No pets accepted.
