How Glaiza de Castro stays fit and motivated to work out

Celebrities are always under the spotlight, where the expectation to look good comes with the territory.

For Glaiza de Castro, this pressure became a significant motivator to work out and lead a healthier lifestyle.

And transitioning to more mature roles marked a turning point in her self-awareness.

Glaiza told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in an interview, “When I started getting roles that required showing some skin, I felt conscious and thought I should start finding a physical activity I enjoy.”

The interview took place at Kinetix Lab’s Strong Is Beautiful event at One Ayala, Makati on July 22, 2024.

Her brother, Alcris Galura, played a crucial role in kickstarting her fitness journey.

Glaiza recounted, “My brother used to be into martial arts so I tried that, then I tried running.”

The Kapuso actress became more committed to an active lifestyle when she bagged the role of Pirena in the 2016 remake of the fantasy drama series Encantadia.

This role required her to reveal more skin than usual with her armor costume, and perform numerous action sequences and stunts for the Kapuso network’s primetime show.

“When I got the role of Pirena in Encantadia, that’s when I started going to the gym regularly for cardio and strength training,” she recalls.

“So since then, working out has become part of my lifestyle.”

Apart from working out, Glaiza has also become more mindful of her diet, which is a huge factor in living a healthier lifestyle.

Currently, Glaiza follows a pescetarian diet.

“I enjoy these meals from Gourmade by Chef Rob Lau because they send me a variety of delicious meals and I don’t have to deprive myself.

“It also saves me time since I don’t really cook. I still reward myself with sweets and food I crave now and again.”

GLAIZA DE CASTRO: FINDING MOTIVATION

Like many of us, Glaiza also finds it challenging to work out on days when she’s not feeling motivated.

However, she has discovered ways to overcome this feeling.

She said, “I just think of how I’d feel after with the endorphins. Sometimes, even a 20 or 30-minute workout is enough.

“You don’t have to spend your whole day to train. I also listen to music to inspire me to move and get excited.

“Sometimes, I just look forward to eating nice food so I feel the need to workout!”

Glaiza also finds motivation in going to a gym that doesn’t feel intimidating and offers opportunities to discover other physical activities as forms of workout.

“Their equipment is top notch and I like their friendly vibe,” said Glaiza of Kinetix Lab.

“The atmosphere is also great as it is bright and motivating.”

As a certified gym girl, we couldn’t help but ask what Glaiza has to bring with her.

She answered, “Not too much. I have an Aquaflask, gym gloves from Under Armour if I’m doing weights.

GLAIZA DE CASTRO: MORE THAN THE PHYSICAL

As much as we can look up to Glaiza for inspiration to hit the gym, she also reminds us that not all of the benefits are physical.

She explained, “Before I used to think that working out is just about looking good.

“Now, as cliche as it may sound, it does make you feel good.

“When you feel like that, you have a healthy body and mind and your thought process can change in a positive way.”

Glaiza added, “It makes you more productive and even if our bodies are different, it’s the mind that really matters and, of course, your physical endurance.

“When you hit your 30s you start to feel more stress, muscle pain, and or even apathy.

“But trying out different physical activities, joining a group of people that are into working out and a balanced diet will inspire and keep you going.”

In addition to these benefits, Glaiza values working out as it has turned into her favorite way to bond with her husband, David Rainey, who shares her enthusiasm for an active lifestyle.

“When I met my husband, David, he was into surfing a lot,” she said.

“I tried that and enjoyed it, especially during the pandemic when most people were stuck in their homes.

“I was grateful I had the opportunity to enjoy nature and develop a workout routine.”
