Ice Spice Says Women In Rap “Secretly Enjoy Competing”

Ice Spice has an explanation for the relationships between her and her peers. In a new interview with Variety as the cover star for the platform’s “New York” issue, the rising rapper discussed the sometimes combative spirit in the music industry.

“It is a competition at the end of the day,” detailed the 23-year-old. “People want to be all ‘I’m a girl’s girl,’ but then behind the scenes being bi**hes.”

She added, “Basically, we here, the girls, are doing amazing. I’m excited to see it. I feel like the competition is what keeps us all excited because I think we all secretly enjoy competing and seeing who put that s**t on better and who’s gon’ get the most views. I can be transparent, and I know the competition is checking on me, too, which is why it’s okay to say that. Because it’s like, ‘Yeah, girl, I’m watching you and I know you watching me.’ And boys are watching, too, because they be secretly haters.” She adds, “But everybody today is competing with everybody no matter if you a boy, girl, nonbinary, whatever it is. You still checking in on your competition. That’s in every industry.”

One of Ice Spice’s wins as the metaphorical competition continues came last month as she won Best New Artist at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. In June, the Bronx native counted more top five Billboard Hot 100 hits than any other artist at that point in the year, including collaborations with Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift.

The “Deli” rapper has also locked in a deal with Dunkin’ Donuts and earned a coveted red carpet spot at this year’s Met Gala.

“Thank you MTV. Oh my God, this is so cool. I just want to thank my Munchkins. I love you guys so much. I want to thank my manager James. I want to thank my producer Riot [USA] for making the best music with me,” shared Ice Spice as she held back tears accepting her first Moon Person trophy.

Elsewhere with Variety, the “Barbie World” performer discussed new music, her industry relationships, and her swift rise to fame. Read the full story here.
