The news of the American standup comic’s death due to a car crash went viral online late Monday night. However, the writings about the 65-year-old sudden demise begin with announcing the so-called news were initiated by terming them as ‘unverified’ or ‘unconfirmed’. Several obituaries propped up on social media further declaring Jeff Foxworthy dead. However, a closer examination of the rumors led us to land on Jeff’s Facebook page. The latest update on his Meta page was of one of Jeff’s set on ‘Vacation in Car with Wife and Daughter’ posted on Monday, suggesting that the comedian did not sustain any injuries or was involved in the car crash.
The rumours about Jeff’s death spread on social sites like wildfire within hours. However, it turned out to be as none of the biggest online hoaxes as none of his social media channels, his team, or family members came forward to confirm the news. The unverified reports started circulating on social media on Monday, and they kept on to circulate till May 14th as well. Apart from the social media posts on the American comedian’s “demise,” an obituary also surfaced on Liblens.com titled ‘Jeffrey “Jeff” Foxworthy Obituary: Beloved Comedian and Actor Passes Away in Car Accident’. Another website snbc13.com, whose article was shared widely on social media, also shared the news of Jeff’s death without actually mentioning any source of the news.
Social media was divided over the issue as some users believed that the death of the comic, who is also featured on Netflix, was not true and that he was alive. Others believed them without realising these were just rumours. Among the reactions that spiraled on social media, a user wrote, “Jeff Foxworthy, died today in a car accident prayers out to the family sad.”
However, another user commented, “I don’t think this is true. He was involved in a car accident in 2016 where a 7-year-old died. I don’t see anything stating he died. I have read so many false reports about people dying & it’s not true.”
In any case, these claims remained unsubstantiated till the time this report was published. Jeff did not react to the rumours either. This is a developing story.
