Jo Koy faced a challenging reception at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, causing him to defend his own monologue during the show. Many of Koy’s jokes seemed to fall flat, drawing silence and at one point boos, instead of applause or laughter. The comedian joked about the popularity of Taylor Swift promising “fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift” than at the NFL games. However, Swift didn’t appear to find the joke funny, pointedly taking a sip of her water instead. His most egregious comment was to reduce the Barbie film to “a plastic doll with big boobies” which drew boos from the crowd. “Some [jokes] I wrote, some other people wrote. Yo, I got the gig ten days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Shut up! You’re kidding me, right? I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.” Koy said during the monologue.
