The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) will honor actress and singer Keke Palmer, producer Jermaine Dupri, and the late music executive Clarence Avant at their upcoming 2023 gala. The event, presented by Live Nation, aims to recognize individuals in Black music who have contributed to the industry and promoted equity within the music community.

Clarence Avant, who passed away on August 13, will receive a special tribute for his six-decade career as a manager and music executive. Known as “The Godfather of Black Music,” Avant worked with renowned artists like Bill Withers, L.A. Reid, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis.
As a member of the BMAC board, Avant left an unparalleled legacy within the music and entertainment industry.
Jermaine Dupri, the founder of So So Def Recordings and a key figure in Atlanta’s hip-hop history, will be honored with the Clarence Avant Trailblazer Award. Shawn Holiday, co-founder of BMAC, expressed gratitude for Avant’s contributions and his posthumous recognition, stating:
“His life and contributions to the industry are unparalleled; his legacy will live on forever.”
Keke Palmer will be honored with the BMAC Social Impact Award for her dual career as an actress and singer. Palmer has significantly impacted the entertainment industry and continues to inspire others with her talent and activism.
Other notable honorees at the gala include Houston rapper Trae The Truth, who will receive the BMAC Change Agent Award for his charity work and activism. Rolling Loud co-founders Tariq Cherif and Matt Zingler will also be presented with the BMAC 365 Award. Previous BMAC honorees include H.E.R., Lil Baby, The Weeknd, U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, and the Recording Academy.
The gala will take place on September 21 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, bringing together influential figures in the music industry to celebrate their achievements and contributions. It is a momentous occasion to recognize the positive impact of these artists and their commitment to promoting equity and inclusivity in the music community.
In other Jermaine Dupri news, he was honored with Atlanta’s Phoenix Award for outstanding contributions to the community and is a key piece in the city’s hip-hop history. Atlanta’s mayor, Andre Dickens, handed Dupri the award at a show celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.
Similarly, rap legend Lil Wayne will also be receiving the BMI Icon Award at the BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards on September 6. Lil Wayne’s career spans over two decades, and he will be honored for his significant contributions to the R&B/Hip-Hop genre.
