L.A.’ Sets Victoria Mahoney To Direct As Spinoff Nears NBC Pilot Order

EXCLUSIVE: Film and TV helmer Victoria Mahoney has been tapped to direct Suits: L.A., NBC’s proposed Suits offshoot, which has been heating up for a pilot order.

As Deadline reported exclusively in October, the project, from Suits creator Aaron Korsh, is not a revival or reboot of the popular USA Network series and, unlike the 2019 Pearson, the new legal procedural is not a spinoff either — it would be a Suits universe series in the vein of the CSI and NCIS franchises featuring new characters in a new location, Los Angeles.

Like Suits, which was set in New York and filmed in Toronto, Suits: L.A. also will film in Canada, with Vancouver standing in for Los Angeles. Production is slated to begin in March, I hear.

Korsh executive produces alongside David Bartis, Doug Liman and Gene Klein, who were EPs with him on the original series.

While the Suits: L.A. does not feature original Suits cast members — at least not in the pilot script — there is a possibility for them to appear, with several, including star Patrick J. Adams, recently expressing willingness to reprise their roles.

The last hit from USA Network’s Blue Sky golden era, Suits found new global fame with its run on Netflix, ranking as the top streaming series of 2023, per Nielsen. Adams and fellow original cast members Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty and Gina Torres, reunited recently at the Golden Globes for what became the most viewed video from the ceremony.

Mahoney, who made history as the first female and first Black director in the Star Wars franchise when she served as the second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, recently directed The Old Guard 2 for Netflix.

In TV, she previously directed the pilot for CBS’ Red Line, executive produced by Ava DuVernay and Greg Berlanti. Her episodic directing credits include Netflix’s You and Seven Seconds, OWN’s Queen Sugar, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Starz’s Power, HBO’s Lovecraft Country and Apple TV+’s The Morning Show. She is repped by CAA and Del Shaw.
