LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – Nebraska is headed to the Elite Eight of the 2023 NCAA Volleyball Tournament after taking down Georgia Tech in three sets on their home court Thursday.
The No. 1-seed Huskers swept the No. 5 Yellow Jackets: 25-11, 25-16, and 25-21.
“The bigger the stage, the more they like it—the more they thrive on it,” John Cook said. “Our hardest matches are when it’s not a big stage. They love this and that’s how they’ve been the last two weeks.”
A Yellow Jackets service error closed out an easy first set win for the Huskers, 25-11. Nebraska jumped out to a 6-1 advantage in the second, and never let Georgia Tech within three points. Lexi Rordiguez set up Harper Murray for the kill to finish Set Two, 25-16.
Georgia Tech made moves in the third set in the form of a Tamara Otene kill that put the Jackets on top 19-18. Nebraska answered with 6-0 run to set up match point. Merritt Beason delivered the final blow to complete the Huskers sweep, 25-21. Beason (11) and Ally Batenhorst were the only players from either team with double-digit kills.
Nebraska breezed past LIU and Missouri with sweeps in the first and second round, respectively. The fifth-seeded Yellow Jackets, who boast wins over Penn State, Ohio State, Florida, Florida State and Louisville, was primed to be a tougher matchup.
The Huskers will take on Arkansas in the Regional Final, after the Razorbacks won their Sweet 16 match-up in five sets over Kentucky.
