New Marvel series ‘Echo’ is an Oklahoma story with Choctaw heroine

An upcoming Marvel Studios series is an Oklahoma story.

“Echo,” which stars Alaqua Cox as Native American heroine Maya Lopez, will premiere Jan. 10 on Disney+. The title character is Choctaw and the series is set in Oklahoma and New York.

A special screening event was held when the first two episodes were shown Friday, Nov. 3 — Choctaw Day — at Choctaw Casino & Resort in Durant. The Choctaw language and Choctaw music are utilized in the series.

A pre-screening reception was staged at nearby Choctaw Cultural Center in Calera, where Choctaw chief Gary Batton and executive producer/director Sydney Freeland participated in red carpet interviews. Freeland, whose resume includes directing episodes of the shot-in-Oklahoma series “Reservation Dogs,” attended the “Echo” screening and took part in a Q&A session afterward.

The cast of “Echo” features familiar faces (Vincent D’Onofrio/Kingpin; Charlie Cox/Daredevil) from Marvel projects and Indigenous actors from “Reservation Dogs” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Stories about “Echo” and the special Choctaw event are forthcoming.
