New York, United States, Sept. 8 (EFE).- New York Fashion Week officially kicked off on Friday with an eclectic and cosmopolitan proposal of more than 70 designers for spring-summer 2024.
This year’s lineup includes classics like Ralph Lauren and Carolina Herrera and groundbreakers like Palomo Spain and Laquan Smith.
For years, New York Fashion Week (NYFW) has resisted the rigidity of the calendar by letting designers schedule their shows, which is why some runways are held before the first day, as Coach, Victoria’s Secret and Pretty Little Thing did this year.
But the action is concentrated over six days, starting on Friday with the return of fashion stalwart Ralph Lauren after a four-year absence and up-and-comer Peter Do, who presents his first collection for Helmut Lang.
The New York lineup also includes other brands returning after a hiatus, such as Jonathan Cohen and 3.1 Phillip Lim, and others making their debut, such as Advisry and Grace Ling,
But there are more who return season after season, starting with established names like Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu or Michael Kors.
Emerging names that have made waves in recent years also stand out, such as Christian Siriano and Brandon Maxwell, who have won television shows; Gabriela Hearst and Collina Strada, who are leading the shift toward sustainability in the industry; or Eckhaus Latta and Palomo Spain, who are breaking free from the corsets of the genre.
The closing event, usually reserved for Marc Jacobs, who used to lower the curtain with theatrical shows worthy of Broadway but is still absent from NYFW, will instead be in the hands of Raúl López and his accessories brand LUAR on Wednesday, September 13, preceded by The Blonds and Willy Chavarria.
In addition to the official events, which are usually limited to fashion professionals and influencers, there will be a series of events open to the general public, such as the Dreamland festival in Central Park, which aims to break the record for attendance at a fashion event with concerts and the Marco Marco catwalk.
In addition, numerous Latin American designers are presented on the catwalks of “Latin Ignition,” such as Alvin Valley or César Galindo; “Fashion Designers of Latin America” (FDLA), such as Shantall Lacayo, as well as the Spanish Custo Barcelona and Agatha Ruiz de la Prada; or “Art Hearts Fashion,” such as Ricardo Seco.
The city is also full of pop-ups, ephemeral events where brands try to make themselves known: Kate Spade held a fashion show in the High Line park; Chanel opened a “diner” where it gives away ice cream and perfume samples; and MontBlanc offers coffee in its store to anyone who visits.
Another of the great attractions of New York Fashion Week that the public can enjoy these days are the celebrity sightings that divide their time between the US Open tennis and the privileged front rows of the parades that attract as many eyes as the collections. EFE
