WATERTOWN — The North Country Goes Green Irish Festival touted as “a weekend of fun, good food, quality entertainment, activities for all age groups, and a celebration of all things Irish” will be held at the Dulles State Office Building, 317 Washington St., Friday, March 15, to Sunday, March 17.
The festival committees are seeking participants for various contests and activities that are part of the Irish Festival including a scholarship pageant, parade and beard growing contest.
The Miss Ireland pageant open to young ladies age 16-20 and Little Miss Ireland is for girls in first through fourth grade with any amount of Irish heritage. Crowned Miss Ireland receives $1,500 and the runner-up is awarded $1,000.
The pageants will be held Friday night of the festival.
Entries are sought to the parade which starts at noon on St. Patrick’s Day.
Cash prizes will be awarded for Best Float, Best Irish Theme, Most Patriotic, Best Athletic or Musical Entertainment, Judge’s Choice, Best Commercial Entry.
Parade registration will close at noon Wednesday, March 13.
There is still time to get in on the Donegal Beard growing contest. Entrants must send a photo showing a clean shaven face and a publication — newspaper or website with the current date.
Judging takes place Friday night at the Irish Festival beginning at 7 p.m. Men are judged on color of beard, length, fullness, texture and if it is a true Donegal. The best beard will be crowned “King of Beards.” There are also awards for most colorful, best accessorized, a senior division, 18 and younger and People’s Choice.
Since the beginning of the Irish Festival, more than $1 million has been donated to local charities including Lewis County Opportunities and CNY Food Bank of CNY along with scholarships.

The festival also includes a flag raising ceremony, Irish themed music, a children’s activities, Irish themed food, the Shamrock Run, comedy night, a cornhole tournament and Sunday service at St. Patrick’s Church.
