Oilers-Panthers Stanley Cup Finals 2024 Preview, Odds, Picks And Series Tracker

The Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers are set to face off in the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals. Both teams overcame the odds of a 2-1 series deficit in the conference finals to win in six games. Florida is the favorite playing in their second consecutive Stanley Cup Finals and seeking their first-ever championship.

The Edmonton Oilers dynasty of the 1980’s won four Stanley Cups led by the greatest hockey player of all time, Wayne Gretzky. The Oilers also won the Stanley Cup in 1990. No Canadian team has captured the Cup since the 1993 Montreal Canadians beat the Gretzky-led Los Angeles Kings in 1993.

  • Florida Panthers (-134) vs. Edmonton Oilers (+112)

The favorites have now won 12 of 14 series during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, but the Oilers were one of the underdog series winners in the Western Conference finals over the Dallas Stars.

Stats And Tactical Preview – Oilers-Panthers

A detailed tactical preview of the Oilers-Panthers series is worth reading as you dig into the matchups, stats, video clips and player profiles.

The Edmonton Oilers are +112 (risk $100 to win $112) to hoist the Stanley Cup. The Oilers were +450 to win the Cup at the start of the second round of this year’s playoffs, and +1100 at the start of the regular season. The Oilers led the NHL this season in 5-on-5 with the top Expected Goals percentage (56.94) in the NHL. Edmonton’s league-best power play with elite scorers leads this year’s playoffs (37.3%), but the PP has not even been the Oilers best special teams units in the playoffs. The Oilers have successfully killed off 29 straight penalties, including 14 against the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference finals.

Connor McDavid leads all players in points during the playoffs, and he’s the favorite to be the series points leader in the Stanley Cup Finals at +115 odds.

Oilers top playoff scoring leaders

  1. Connor McDavid – 5 goals, 26 assists, 31 points
  2. Leon Draisaitl – 10 goals, 18 assists, 287 pts
  3. Evan Bouchard – 6 goals, 21 assists, 27 pts
  4. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – 6 goals, 14 assists, 20 pts
  5. Zach Hyman – 14 goals, 4 assists, 18 points
  • Goalie Stuart Skinner: 11-5 with 2.50 goals against & .897 save percentage. Skinner was his best in the Western Conference Finals with a .923 save percentage and 1.91 goals against average in six games vs. the Stars.

The Florida Panthers are -134 (risk $134 to win $100) to hoist the Stanley Cup. The Panthers were +500 to win the Cup at the start of the second round of this year’s playoffs, and +2000 at the start of the regular season. Goalie Sergey Bobrovsky has also played better in this year’s playoffs, and now has played in more than 80 playoff games with a .906 save percentage. Bobrovsky is a Conn Smythe contender with odds of +430 to win the award. However, if the Panthers win the Stanley Cup, the preferred play would be to bet star center Aleksander Barkov (+370).

The Panthers have skated past the Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals while scoring against three of the best goaltenders in the NHL – Andrei Vasilevskiy, Jeremy Swayman and Igor Shesterkin. Eight of the last nine Panthers playoff games have gone under the game total which followed six straight overs. At 5-on-5, the Panthers are second only to the Dallas Stars in the playoffs in scoring chances for, high-danger chances for and are leading the playoffs in shots for. They are also third in 5-on-5 scoring. Natural Stat Trick also notes that Florida has given up the second fewest scoring changes against per 60 minutes in the playoffs.

Panthers top playoff scoring leaders

  1. Matthew Tkachuk – 5 goals, 14 assists, 19 points
  2. Aleksander Barkov – 6 goals, 11 assists, 17 points
  3. Carter Verhaeghe – 9 goals, 8 assists, 17 points
  • Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky: 12-5 with 2.20 goals against & .908 save percentage.

Prop Bets

Additional Game 1 and series prop bets and picks available on FanDuel Research with Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner over 26.5 saves in Game 1 recommended along with Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl to score the most goals in the series (+600). If you’re interested in a big longshot prop, then Oilers leading playoff goal scorer Zach Hyman (14 goals) has very attractive odds of +7500, or 75/1 to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, which is awarded annually to the Most Valuable Player of his team during the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup Playoffs (not just the finals). Hyman is chasing the NHL single playoff record of 19 goals.

How They Were Made – Oilers vs. Panthers

You can follow my sharp Canadien colleague Brian (Sherwood) at Sportswagers.ca for NHL series selections and game-by-game picks throughout the playoffs. Complimentary plays and value-added insight without the tout talk or pay for picks. Sherwood’s extensive knowledge and understanding of the betting markets is provided in his daily game analysis on sports and filled with insightful information, advanced stats and value-driven betting decisions.

Last year, Sherwood bet and picked the huge upset by the Florida Panthers over the Boston Bruins in the opening round of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

His Game 1 pick is on the Edmonton Oilers, noting that “the Panthers are getting way too much credit from just about anyone outside of Edmonton, and their stock is through the roof, which has them spotting an inflated price in Game 1.” Yeah, we’ll take the best player in the universe, who has a big chip on his shoulder, at a plus price and let the chips fall where they may.

I bet the Oilers to win the series and capture the Stanley Cup. I’ll also be looking to play them to win in regulation at better odds in Games 3 and 4 back in Edmonton when the entire country gets behind the Oilers as a Canadian team tries to win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1993.

You can bet on it.
