‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Barbie’ and ‘Succession’ Dominate SAG Award Nomination

LOS ANGELES, CA — “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” continued their domination of the 2024 Hollywood awards nominations Wednesday as the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced — with each scoring four nods to lead in the film categories, while HBO’s “Succession” led the way on the TV side with five.

“Oppenheimer,” the story of atomic bomb mastermind J. Robert Oppenheimer, captured nominations for outstanding cast in a motion picture — the SAG Awards’ equivalent of best picture — as well as nods for Cillian Murphy for actor in a leading role; Emily Blunt for actress in a leading role; and Robert Downey Jr. for supporting actor.

“Barbie,” Greta Gerwig’s film that brought Mattel’s iconic American toy doll to the big screen, took nominations for outstanding ensemble; Margot Robbie for best actress; Ryan Gosling for supporting actor; and stunt ensemble in a motion picture.

Joining “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” in the best ensemble category were “American Fiction,” “The Color Purple” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Murphy won the Golden Globe Award for best actor in a motion picture drama this past Sunday, and he is joined for the SAG equivalent by Bradley Cooper in “Maestro”; Colman Domingo in “Rustin”; Paul Giamatti in “The Holdovers” and Jeffrey Wright in “American Fiction.” Giamatti captured a Golden Globe on Sunday for best actor in a motion picture musical or comedy for his turn as a prep school teacher.

Joining Robbie in the SAG best actress category are Lily Gladstone — who took the Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture drama for her role in the Martin Scorsese western “Killers of the Flower Moon” — along with Annette Bening for “Nyad”; Carey Mulligan for “Maestro” and Emma Stone for “Poor Things.” Stone won Sunday’s Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy.

On the TV side, “Succession,” the tale of a billionaire family’s cut- throat battles to succeed an aging media mogul, was nominated for best ensemble in a drama series as it closes its much-decorated four-year rule. It also delivered nominations for Sarah Snook for actress in a drama series; as well as Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Matthew MacFayden for actor in a drama series.

“Succession” will battle for the ensemble award with “The Crown,” “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us” and “The Morning Show.”

Best comedy ensemble nods went to “Abbott Elementary,” “Barry” “The Bear,” “Only Murders in the Building” and “Ted Lasso.”

The nominees for outstanding individual, cast and ensemble performances were announced on Instagram Live on Wednesday morning by Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, while the nods for outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles were announced by SAG Awards Committee members Jason George and Woody Schultz, with an introduction by SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher.

The SAG Awards are often considered by performers as being among the most cherished Hollywood honors, because they are voted upon and awarded exclusively by other actors. The awards are also strong predictors of who will win on Oscar night.

The 30th annual SAG Awards will be presented Feb. 24 from the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall and will stream live on Netflix.
