The Orioles finished the regular season with the best record in the American League (101-61), 48 comeback wins and a 61-19 record when they scored first — but it all came to a head Tuesday night in a must-win Game 3 of the American League Division Series that the Rangers won 7-1.

Texas shortstop Corey Seager got the Rangers on the board early, hitting an 84-mph changeup for a home run to right-center in the first inning.

The second inning would prove costly to the Orioles as the Rangers loaded the bases and right-fielder Adolis Garcia hit a home run, tacking on five more runs after forcing Dean Kremer to hurl 31 pitches in the inning. Kremer would exit after 1 2/3 innings.

Entering the seventh inning with 80 pitches and five strikeouts, Rangers right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi got his third 1-2-3 inning of the game before taking a curtain call.

In the eighth inning, Henderson singled and Anthony Santander and Ryan Mountcastle walked to load the bases. Then, pinch-hitting for Ryan O’Hearn, Aaron Hicks grounded out on a 3-2 count.

Finally, the Orioles went three up, three down in the ninth inning.

The future is very bright in Baltimore

While the Orioles examined what went wrong in the postseason, the bigger picture and future of the team is awfully bright in Baltimore.

“We’re supposed to win 76 games. We won 101 in the American League East,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “I’m really proud of our group, they defied all the odds.”

“We just really thought it was going to be this year,” Orioles left-fielder Austin Hays said.

Watching the Rangers celebrate will drive the off-season workouts.

“Obviously, we want that to be us celebrating, so (we’re) taking that into next year remembering this feeling and remembering how bad it sucked to feel it come to an end,” Orioles pitcher D.L. Hall said. “Next year, we don’t want to be done playing until everybody’s done playing.”

Three games against the Rangers were the ultimate buzzkill, but a season with two champagne showers has to be considered a huge success for a very young team.

“Obviously, this is disappointing. We wanted to win the World Series this year. But, you know, to get that experience and just be, you know, ready to go — especially with how young this team is — the future’s bright,” Orioles pitcher Danny Coulombe said.

And Henderson, the Birds’ brightest star, grew even brighter in the playoffs.

“I’ve had playoffs in the minor leagues, but it’s nothing like this, so I was glad I was able to get the experience in the first full season … I much rather have won,” Henderson said. “It was a great team, we really embraced each other from day one of spring training and it’s just a really fun atmosphere that we had and that we created.”

So, what will Orioles Executive Vice President and General Manager Mike Elias and his front office do to address some glaring needs at starting and relief pitching? With four months until pitchers and catchers report to the 2024 spring training, there’s time to figure it out.

“It’s the most fun team I’ve ever been a part of, the most close-knit clubhouse I’ve ever seen of any baseball team I’ve ever played on,” Hays said.
