Triple Grammy-winner Future and Grammy-nominated producer Metro Boomin topped the Billboard Hot 100 with both the albums We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You. The track Like That featuring Kendrick Lamar has been on top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for three weeks in a row now. More recent singles include Type S—t.

It will be a night for guitar fans as Living Color’s Vernon Reid and Rhianna guitarist Nuno Bettancourt show off their astonishing instrumental mastery in songs ranging from Glamor Boy to Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee.

Both bands were acclaimed in their 1990s heyday as being apart from the mainstream metal of the day due to their variety in songwriting and willingness to jump genres.

With a headline performance from rapper/drummer Kassa Overall closing off the first day’s events and CBC radio host Odario Williams’ project Odario shutting down Sunday night, hip-hop is a feature at the free Downtown Jazz events at this year’s Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

But you can also catch groups ranging from local indie rock crew Parlour Panther to the adventurous sounds of the Peggy Lee Band and many others.

Granville Island is also hopping all weekend with events at Performance Works, Ocean Artworks and the Revue Stage. These range from interviews with local authors and players to showcases by veteran local scene bandleaders such as keyboardist/producer Chris Gestrin Trio, NYC-based Juno award-winning pianist Cat Toren with the John Korsrud Quintent and much more. These shows range from free to ticketed.

Additionally, there is the North Shore Jazz Series which includes both free and ticketed performances. Highlights are sure to be gigs such as the free Scott Smith and the Midnight Riders’ Allman Brothers Celebration at the Shipyards on June 30.
