Rapsody Discusses New Music, Industry Woes In New Interview – VIBE.com

Rapsody opened up about the realities of the music industry during a recent interview. Speaking with TT Torres on Hot 97 on Wednesday (Dec. 20), the Grammy-nominated rapper discussed how at one point she almost bowed out of Hip-Hop.

“It wasn’t hard to be myself,” explained the 40-year-old. “But it’s hard to be who I am in the music business and feel that people care or there’s space for you or people value you just as much as they value somebody who may be more entertaining.”

She continued, “It’s hard to want to continue the journey and that was a real thought for me. I said it in ‘Asteroids‘ – ‘I almost went ghost, like Lauryn [Hill]’.”

The aforementioned track “Asteroids” was issued in October and signaled a new era for the North Carolina native. Produced by Hit-Boy, the song is the first from an upcoming album, teased in a creative trailer. The currently unnamed work will be Rapsody’s first album since 2019’s Eve.

“With this album, I wasn’t as focused on what I’m necessarily known for – being lyrical and all these metaphors and similes,” Rapsody elaborated. “It’s going to come out naturally when it does, but it wasn’t a focus. I was focused on being more profound this time. Because especially like as a woman, I would love to be a representation for women and speak for women and have a connection with women.”
