SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – While Sam Hartman wasn’t among the seven former Notre Dame players who heard their name called during the 2024 NFL Draft, he is still headed to a new home at the pro level.
It was announced shortly after the draft ended on Saturday night that Hartman signed with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted free agent.
The Wake Forest grad transfer finished his six-year college football career with 134 touchdown passes, which is tied for third-most in FBS history with Graham Harrell, and 15,656 passing yards, which ranks fifth all-time.
In his only season in South Bend, Hartman threw for 2,689 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. According to our reporting partners at the South Bend Tribune, his lone season in a pro-style offense at Notre Dame yielded career-bests in completion percentage (63.5%), yards per attempt (8.9) and passer rating (159.5).
Hartman went 36-21 as a starter in college but went just 5-10 against ranked teams. He also struggled in the Senior Bowl, going 7-for-25 for 69 yards and one interception.
Hartman will not be the only Notre Dame player to sign with an NFL team as an undrafted free agent, as the UDFA market is important for NFL teams that are still looking to fill holes they weren’t able to fill in the draft.
He joins Javontae Jean-Baptiste in our nation’s capital, as Jean-Baptiste was selected in the seventh round of the draft by the Commanders.
