CROMWELL, Conn. — Former University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler defeated Tom Kim on the first hole of a playoff on Sunday afternoon to win the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. The No. 1 player in the world, Scheffler won for the sixth time this year and became the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to record six PGA TOUR victories in a season before the month of July.
Scheffler registered a 72-hole total of 22-under 258 (65-64-64-65) and was forced into a playoff when Kim birdied the 18th hole on Sunday to reach 22-under (62-65-65-66). On the first hole in the playoff, the 18th hole, Scheffler made a par while Kim recorded a bogey and Scheffler won for the sixth time in his last 10 starts.
Scheffler’s current historic run has included victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, THE PLAYERS Championship, the Masters, the RBC Heritage, the Memorial Tournament and the Travelers Championship. Scheffler is just the sixth player in PGA TOUR history to register at least six victories in a season before July. The other five include: Jimmy DeMaret (1940), Byron Nelson (1945), Ben Hogan (1946), Sam Snead (1950) and Arnold Palmer (1960 and 1962).
The win at the Travelers Championship was Scheffler’s sixth victory of the season and 12th career PGA TOUR win. He is the first player since Tiger Woods in 2009 to win six times on the PGA TOUR in a season. Scheffler is just the fourth different player in the last 40 years to win at least six times in a single TOUR season. Tiger Woods (2000) and Vijay Singh (2004) each won nine times, while Woods won eight times in 1999 and 2006 and seven times in 2007, and Woods (2005 and 2009) and Nick Price (1994) both posted six wins.
The win marked the 104th official PGA TOUR victory for The University of Texas Men’s Golf program, accomplished by 17 different individuals in the 98-year history of the TOUR.
