SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Tex. (KGNS) – Reports of shark attacks have been surfacing on social media from South Padre Island this Thursday, July 4. The Associated Press has confirmed one such attack during the morning’s Fourth of July celebrations.
A man suffered a severe shark bite at 11 a.m., according to South Padre Island City Secretary Nikki Soto. He received immediate treatment from the fire and police departments at the beach before being transported to a hospital.
One viewer sent KGNS a photo of an attack, but it is currently unknown if it is the same incident reported by the Associated Press.
“Currently, the South Padre Island Beach Patrol, fire, and police departments are patrolling the shoreline and utilizing drones,” Soto said.
Authorities are on high alert as they continue to monitor the situation.
