Siobhan Fallon Hogan’s new movie, shot in Central NY, now available to buy/stream

A new movie shot in Siobhan Fallon Hogan’s Central New York hometown is now available to watch on digital streaming services.

Fans can rent or buy “Shelter in Solitude,” written by and starring Fallon Hogan, on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV, Vudu or Google Play. It costs $3.99 (SD) or $4.99 (HD) to rent on most platforms, and $14.99 (SD) or $19.98 (HD) to purchase the film.

“Shelter in Solitude” centers on a death row prisoner (“The Orville” actor Peter Macon) with 10 days left to live and his unconventional relationship with a wannabe country singer, Val Fagan (Fallon Hogan), whose small town bar is shut down by the Covid pandemic. The also cast includes Robert Patrick (”Terminator 2″) as her brother, the prison warden, and “The Simpsons” voice actor Dan Castellaneta.

The film’s story, set in early 2020, was inspired by Fallon Hogan’s father, who was a lawyer in Syracuse.

The faith-filled, country-western prison love story was shot last year in the Syracuse area, including a defunct jail on State Street. Fallon Hogan, who was born in Syracuse and grew up in Cazenovia, graduated from nearby Le Moyne College in 1983. Some of Fallon Hogan’s friends from the 1979 class of Cazenovia High School appear as extras in a bar scene at the Blue Canoe Grill in nearby Erieville, and her husband and children were involved in the production, too.

Fallon Hogan is at her quirky best in the movie, showcasing her acting style best known for comedic characters like Elaine’s roommate on “Seinfeld,” the bus driver Dorothy in “Forrest Gump,” the victim of an alien encounter in “Men in Black,” and as a cast member for the 1991-1992 season of “Saturday Night Live.” She also shows off her dramatic skills, like in past performances in 2001′s “Dancer in the Dark,” and TV’s “Wayward Pines.”

Fallon Hogan called Macon’s performance “Oscar-worthy” and praised the rest of the cast, including Robert Patrick (”Terminator 2″) as her brother, the prison warden.

Patrick previously co-starred in “Rushed,” which was the first movie released under Fallon Hogan and her husband’s production company Emerald Caz Productions and also shot in Central New York. “Emerald because I’m Irish and Caz because of Cazenovia,” she told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard last year.

“Shelter in Solitude,” directed by Denmark’s Vibeke Muasya, had a local premiere earlier this year at the Manlius Cinema and was shown in theaters nationwide this past fall. The movie won Best Actress and Best Cinematography awards at the 2023 Boston International Film Festival.
