Sony Music Introduces Artist Assistance Program

INSCMagazine: Get Social!

In a move aimed at extending comprehensive support to its stable of artists, Sony Music Entertainment has unveiled an expansive initiative known as the “Artist Assistance” program. This program, revealed through an internal letter, signals the company’s commitment to the well-being and development of its signed artists. According to Xttrawave, Sony Music is regarded as one of the big three major labels alongside Universal and Warner Music Group.

The Artist Assistance program is a significant expansion of Sony’s previously announced Artists Forward initiative, which was introduced in June alongside the groundbreaking decision to absolve debts for some artists who had not recouped their initial cash advances from older record deals.

Under the newly introduced Artist Assistance program, Sony Music will offer free, confidential counseling services to all actively signed artists worldwide. This initiative is an integral part of the health care benefits package that Sony artists are entitled to as major label signees, with American artists benefiting from insurance policies provided through the major union SAG-AFTRA. The intention behind Artist Assistance is to raise awareness among artists about the benefits they are eligible for and facilitate their access to these resources.

Additionally, Sony Music has committed to allocating more resources to address questions related to artists’ earnings and pay statements. While the letter did not specify the nature of these resources, the move aims to enhance transparency and support for artists on Sony’s roster. Furthermore, Sony is in the process of developing a program designed to educate its newer artists about the inner workings of Sony Music and provide them with guidance on best practices for promoting their music effectively.

To oversee the Artist Assistance program and related initiatives, Sony has appointed Susan Moultrie as Senior Vice President of Artist Initiatives and Business Administration. Susan Moultrie is a seasoned industry veteran with a wealth of experience in media and entertainment, having previously served in various roles at Sony Music during the 1990s and 2000s.

This initiative comes at a time when the music industry as a whole is facing increasing scrutiny regarding fairness and transparency. Many Black artists and industry insiders have raised concerns about racial inequality that has persisted for decades. While new initiatives and heightened awareness have been applauded, critics are advocating for artist-friendly record deals that provide musicians with a larger share of earnings and ownership for their creative work.

In conclusion, Sony Music Entertainment’s Artist Assistance program marks a significant step toward providing comprehensive support and resources to its artists, emphasizing their well-being and career development in an evolving music industry landscape.
