Spirit Airlines emergency water landing Jamaica to Fort Lauderdale

(WJW) – Video from inside the cabin of a Spirit Airlines plane shows the worry and panic as a full plane of passengers prepared for a possible emergency water landing.

Bettina Rogers captured the moments on her phone.

It happened on an Airbus flight making its way to Fort Lauderdale from Montego Bay, Jamaica on Sunday, May 26.

The video shows the takeoff from Montego Bay over white sand beaches and crystal blue waters.

About a minute and a half into the video, you see Rogers in a life vest.

According to Rogers, the pilot informed passengers shortly after takeoff that they would be returning to Montego Bay, and that there was “nothing to be alarmed about.”

Rogers told CNN that as the plane turned back, the pilot announced, “Prepare for emergency water landing.

“It was scary, and people were freaking out and panicking,” Rogers told CNN.

The flight landed safely. Rogers’ video shows orange life vests scattered across the floor of the cabin.

Spirit Airlines said the plane had a “suspected mechanical issue” in a statement but didn’t elaborate further.

Here’s what they released to FOX 8:

Spirit Airlines flight 270 (MBJ-FLL) returned to Montego Bay (MBJ) on May 26 out of an abundance of caution following a suspected mechanical issue. The plane landed safely at MBJ and taxied to the terminal where Guests deplaned under normal procedures. Safety is our top priority, and the aircraft will be thoroughly evaluated by our maintenance team. We apologize to our Guests for any inconvenience, and we arranged a new aircraft to complete the flight to Fort Lauderdale (FLL).

Rogers told Local 10 News that the airline issued her a flight credit.
