Move over, Spider-Man… there are some new web-slingers in town.
Sony has released the first trailer for “Madame Web,” starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, a suspense thriller set in the studio’s universe of Marvel characters.
Johnson steps into the leading role of Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan paramedic who may have clairvoyant abilities — which allow her to see into the future and the interconnected spider world. In the trailer, she meets and forges a partnership with a trio of young women — including Sweeney’s Julia Carpenter, who later takes on the mantle of Spider-Woman in the comics — to understand her past and survive the deadly present.
The cast also includes Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps and Zosia Mamet.
After the huge success of Sony Pictures Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” it’s clear there’s still an appetite for all things that can wall crawl and web swing. “Madame Web” is the latest chapter Sony’s universe of Marvel Characters, following the releases of Tom Hardy’s “Venom” (2018), “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021) and Jared Leto’s “Morbius” (2022).
Up next for Sony is a third “Venom” movie slated for Nov. 8, 2024, and “Kraven the Hunter,” starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, on Aug. 30, 2024. “Madame Web” is Sony’s first comic book adaptation that features a woman in the lead role.
SJ Clarkson, who helmed Marvel’s “Jessica Jones” and “The Defenders,” directs “Madame Web” from a screenplay she co-wrote with Claire Parker. The movie swings into theaters on Feb. 14, 2024.
