Syracuse native eligible for Best New Artist at Grammys
A rapper from Syracuse is eligible for Best New Artist at the 2024 Grammys, according to Billboard. “Favorite Song” hitmaker Toosii, who was born in Syracuse and lived in the city until he moved to North Carolina at age 13, is one of 405 artists being considered for the Big Four category, along with notable artists like Noah Kahan, Ava Max, Jelly Roll, Ice Spice, Lainey Wilson, Gracie Abrams, Coco Jones, The War and Treaty, JVKE, Peso Pluma, Fifty Fifty, Cody Johnson, Sabrina Carpenter, Pink Pantheress, Raye, Stephen Sanchez, Bailey Zimmerman, Madison Beer, Tate McRae and Mitski. (Zach Bryan was ruled ineligible as his “Something in the Orange” received a Grammy nomination last year.)
Accoring to Billboard, first-round voting for the 66th annual Grammy Awards opened Wednesday and closes Oct. 20. Nominees will be announced on Nov. 10; eight artists will be nominated for Best New Artist. Winners will be announced in a televised ceremony Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Toosii, whose real name is Nau’Jour Lazier Grainger, is a 23-year-old hip-hop artist who reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Favorite Song” earlier this year. He was named to the XXL Freshman Class in 2021; collaborated with artists like Latto, DaBaby, Khalid, 21 Savage, and Wiz Khalifa; performed on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”; and recently released his second album, “Naujour.” He currently averages nearly 6 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
