Let’s face it: 2023 has been the year of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, especially since they’re icons who have been dominating pop culture and boosting the economy for decades. Thankfully, the Tayoncé heart just keeps! On! Beating! The artists embarked on two of the biggest stadium tours this summer—the Eras Tour and Renaissance World Tour, respectively—and went on to release filmed versions of their shows for fans to enjoy in theaters. The duo also stepped out to support each other at the star-studded premieres for both flicks and now, Taylor has opened up about their years-long love fest and I’m currently just:
In her TIME Person of the Year cover story, Tay gushed about the “My House” hitmaker and how her support at the Eras movie premiere was “everything.”
“She’s the most precious gem of a person—warm and open and funny,” Taylor said. “And she’s such a great disrupter of music-industry norms. She taught every artist how to flip the table and challenge archaic business practices.”
As for the constant comparison the artists have been faced with throughout their careers, Tay revealed that they haven’t let it faze them. “There were so many stadium tours this summer, but the only ones that were compared were me and Beyoncé,” she told TIME. “Clearly it’s very lucrative for the media and stan culture to pit two women against each other, even when those two artists in question refuse to participate in that discussion.”
Tay and Bey are no strangers to being pitted against each other—it happened back in 2009 when Taylor’s “You Belong With Me” won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video and KanyeGate ensued. When Beyoncé won Video of the Year for “Single Ladies” that same night, she invited Taylor back on stage to give the speech she had been robbed of when Kanye said Beyoncé “had the best video of all time.”
The “Cruel Summer” crooner told TIME, “I think it’s radical and beautiful that the two of us actively reject that conversation. I know we’ve evolved past that conversation because she and I are trying to do bigger things.”
We simply have no choice but to stan the Tayoncé of it all. 🥹
