Taylor Swift’s Latest Look Is Either an Easter Egg — or a Wardrobe Malfunction

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

When Taylor Swift hit the town with Gigi Hadid over the weekend, it wasn’t just the A-list girls’ night out that had fans in a frenzy — it was also the singer’s necklace.

Swift, 34, and Hadid, 29, were photographed in New York City on Saturday, September 21, dressed in autumnal outfits as they walked to restaurant The Corner Store. Per photos obtained by Page Six, the supermodel donned a chocolate brown trench coat over beige slacks, which she paired with brown boots and a mustard-colored purse. Swift, for her part, rocked a rust-and-cadet blue plaid mini skirt, which she complemented with a dark brown leather belt, a long-sleeved black crop top and snakeskin boots. Most significant to fans, however, was the chunky gold necklace around her neck, a chain link piece that featured two letters: TS — which, when flipped upside down, look like “12.”

The necklace — which flipped both right-side up and upside-down during Swift’s outing with Hadid — immediately had fans wondering if the 14-time Grammy winner had just dropped yet another Easter egg, considering “TS12” is the fan-made working title of Swift’s eventual 12th album.

“DOES THAT NECKLACE SAY 12??????? DO WE NEED TO BE SCARED OF TS12 COMING WTF WAIT,” one fan reacted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“The way the necklace actually says TS12 bc you can look at it two different ways 🤡🤡🤡,” another wrote.

Still, other fans tried to convince their fellow Swifties that the necklace flip was probably just an accident.

“taylor when she sees that her necklace flipped and now ts12 is trending,” one person pointed out, along with a photo of the “Anti-Hero” singer making a “yikes”-type face on the red carpet.

“Taylor when she just released 31 songs but she wore her necklace upside down now TS12 rumours are flying,” shared another person, along with a GIF of reality star Tiffany Pollard sitting down looking exhausted.

Someone else summed up the three types of reactions from the fan base after seeing the necklace photos.

“Swifties today: ‘Taylor is human and a TS necklace upside down isn’t something to over-analyze, she’s just a girl,'” they opined, imitating one contingent of the fandom.

“‘A mirrored TS is a 12 which means she is hinting at TS12 cause she’s Taylor and she would absolutely easter-egg something this way,'” the user mimicked again, before diving into their imitation of the third group of Swifties, who instead think the pop star’s footwear was sending a message about a different TS12 — Reputation (Taylor’s Version).

“‘SNAKESKIN BOOTS! REP TV NEXT,'” they shared.

Another Swiftie had even more words to say about the fandom as a whole.

“People saying the TS on the necklace was intentionally flipped over to look like a 12 are doing too much,” they penned. “At the same time people acting like everyone should’ve immediately known that the 12 was actually TS flipped upside down and then mirrored by the camera are doing too much.”

Whether Swift’s “TS/12” necklace was meant to be an Easter egg or not has yet to be determined — but what fans do know is that she’s used jewelry before to drop at least one telling hint. On 1989’s “Out of the Woods,” she famously sings about “two paper airplanes flying” — which has been heavily theorized to refer to her matching paper airplane necklaces with ex Harry Styles, who has long been thought to have inspired the track.
