John Young’s Original Mumbo Sauce event. Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6 along the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, 146 Broadway.

Product launches are not usual newsletter items, but when it is one of historical importance in Buffalo’s culinary world, then it is certainly noteworthy. The story starts back in the early 1960s, when John Young opened what is considered the first wing shop in Buffalo with Wings N’ Things on the East Side. It is where he served wings whole with drum, flat and tip still together and enveloped in his sweet and tangy sauce. That “mumbo sauce” and those wings led to his nickname of “the King of the Wings.” This event celebrates the launch of the original mumbo sauce that will now be available to the public for the first time in decades. There will be free samples and presentations at the event.
