PINEHURST − Tiger Woods needs no introduction. He stands as one of the most accomplished − as well as prolific − professional golfers in the world, having won 15 major championships in his near 30-year career.
Even now, he is tied for the most wins on the PGA Tour and has the second-most major wins of any golfer in the history of the sport.
Coming into 2024, Woods is still chasing another major championship to add to his repertoire. Five years have passed since his latest major win at the 2019 Masters. His last win at the US Open came in 2008, and served as the start of his major drought that lasted for over a decade.
Even though 16 years have come and gone since Woods claimed his latest US Open title at Torrey Pines, Woods is in the hunt to break that spell. As such, his performance is bound to be watched closely by any and all followers of the event through Thursday and, should the winds blow his way, into the weekend.

Tiger Woods ends first round with a par
After a tumultuous back half of his round, Tiger Woods managed to play damage control.
Woods took a step back on No. 8 after his two straight pars. He missed the green on his approach shot, came within eight feet on his par putt and tapped in for his fourth bogey on the front nine.
On his final hole of the day, Woods’ tee shot drifted off the green. He chipped up for an easy putt and closed out for par, his ninth of the day and third through his last four holes.
Woods ends his first day of the US Open with a 4-over 74.
Salvaging short game: Tiger Woods warming back up
Tiger Woods seems to have found a rhythm in the back half of the front nine holes at Pinehurst.
Woods hit the green pin-high on his tee shot on the treacherous par-3 No. 6 and bounced back behind the green. His birdie putt from the fringe came up short, and he holed out on an eight-footer for par.
On a par-4 No. 7, Woods’ drive found the fairway before his approach shot landed in the bunker off to the right of the green. A quick up-and-down from the bunker, including a long one-putt, salvaged his second par in a row.
Woods is 3-over through 16 holes.
Tiger Woods gets first birdie of Front 9
After bogeying five of his last seven holes, Tiger Woods found a bit of respite after birdying on Hole No. 5.
Another drive in the fairway at the fulcrum of the dogleg No. 5 allowed Woods to make an approach shot and hit the green in just two shots. He brought a potential eagle putt within three feet, and a no-thought birdie putt brought Woods back down to 3-over through 14 holes.
No. 4 gets better of Tiger Woods
The fourth hole at Pinehurst No. 2 is infamous for its brutality. Tiger Woods learned that the hard way after his drive missed the fairway for the second time today and landed in a bunker along the right, and his second shot hooked right of the green.
Woods recovered with a chip shot that put him within five feet of the hole, but his attempted par putt drifted just left of the hole. Woods tapped in for a bogey and is now 4-over on the day.

After five holes of struggle, Tiger Woods found a bit of reprieve on the third hole of the front nine.
Woods’ drive hugged the right side of the fairway. He found the green in regulation, and a long birdie putt set up an easy tap-in for par. Woods is now 3-over through 12 holes.
Tiger Woods slips to 3-over
The second hole on the front nine tripped up Tiger Woods once again.
Woods managed to avoid the native grasses on the second hole after driving down the fairway, but a sliced approach shot put Woods just to the right of the green. His eight-foot putt for par lipped the hole and a tap-in resulted in his fourth bogey in five holes. Woods is 3-over through 11.
Tiger Woods bogeys on No. 1
Tiger Woods’ early green magic might be fading. He set himself up after reaching the green in regulation, setting up a putt from above the pin near the top of the green.
His first putt, however, didn’t have the traction to come close, and Woods was forced to putt for par from 10 feet out. His second putt broke hard left, and he tapped-in for bogey. Woods is 2-over through 10 holes.

Tiger Woods stabilized his round on the 18th hole on Thursday (his ninth hole of the day after starting on No. 10).
Another drive in the fairway led to a wedge approach. While not his best effort – pushed 30 feet right of the hole, despite a “green light” hole location according to TV announcers – Tiger’s birdie putt rolled just past the cup and a tap-in gave him a score of 1-over 36.
Pinehurst bites back: Tiger Woods faces first adversity of US Open
The 16th and 17th holes at Pinehurst have taken the steam out of Tiger Woods’ opening round of the US Open.
After hitting his drive into the native grass on the 16th, Woods was forced to pitch out. His approach on the par-4 hole went 20 feet past the hole, and he narrowly missed the par putt.
On No. 17, his 35-footer for birdie went nearly 10 feet past the hole, and his par putt was well off the mark, giving him back-to-back bogeys entering the final hole of his first nine.
He’s at 1 over through 8 holes.
Fairways and greens: Tiger Woods playing ‘US Open golf’
Another fairway and another green in regulation for Tiger Woods on the par-4 14th hole. His 12-footer for birdie rolled just past the hole, but he made the comeback for par.
On the par-3 15th hole, Tiger hit his tee shot to 45 feet, put his birdie putt within 18 inches and made another par.
He remains among a dozen players at 1 under for the tournament.
Tiger Woods’ putter stays hot on No. 13
Another fairway hit for Tiger at his fourth hole of the day, No. 13. His approach went beyond the pin and just off the back of the green – a shot you’ll see a lot the rest of the tournament.
His putt from the back of the green ran almost nine feet past the hole, but he confidently made the comeback putt for par, walking after his ball before it fell into the cup.
He remains at 1 under, tied for second as the first wave of golfers still begins its round.
Tiger Woods avoids a mistake at No. 12
Woods is 3-for-3 on the first three holes. Drive in the fairway, second shot leaks out to the right. On No. 12, he came up short and right into a bunker.
His sand shot finished 10 feet from the hole and, after watching playing partner Will Zalatoris putt from a similar line, drained his par putt to remain at 1 under.
Tiger stays at 1-under through 2 holes
Woods hit the middle of the fairway again on No. 11, then put his approach on the front right of the green. A 65-foot birdie putt was within tap-in range for an easy par.
Tiger starts his US Open with a birdie
We’ve seen it plenty of times over the years — Tiger Woods taking advantage of par-5 holes.
After striping a drive and hitting his second just off the fairway, Woods pitched within 12 feet of the hole and rolled in a birdie putt to start his U.S. Open on Thursday at Pinehurst.
No. 10 is the only par 5 on the back nine at Pinehurst No. 2.

Woods is scheduled to tee off at 7:29 a.m. ET for Thursday’s first round, and he will tee off at 1:14 p.m. on Friday for the second round.

Tiger Woods wins at US Open
Woods has won 15 major championships throughout his career, and three of those wins have come at the US Open. His wins came in 2000, 2002 and 2008. His win on 2008 earned him the distinction of having won each major championship three times, a feat only matched by Jack Nicklaus.
Tiger Woods history at US Open
This year will mark Woods’ 23rd appearance in the US Open in 30 years. His first appearance came in 1995, when he withdrew during the second round due to a wrist injury. He steadily climbed the leaderboard over the next four appearances, culminating in a tie with Vijay Singh for third place at the 1999 US Open after finishing 1-over par.
Woods earned his first of three first-place finishes in 2000, shooting a 12-under par 272 to claim his third ever major win. To this day, his 15-stroke margin of victory over runners-up Miguel Angel Jimenez and Ernie Els remains the largest in US Open history and made him the first player to finish the major at double digits under par.
He went on to win the US Open again in 2002 with a 3-under 277 at Bethpage Black Course, which marked the second time he was the only player under par in that year’s US Open. His third and latest win at the US Open came in 2008, when he defeated Rocco Mediate on the first hole of sudden death, following an 18-hole playoff. Since then, his highest placement has been a tie for fourth in 2010, and Woods has not appeared in a US Open since 2020.
