It’s Wordle Wednesday which means on top of today’s Wordle, I give you fine puzzle-solvers a riddle, brain teaser or logic puzzle to solve. This keeps things interesting and your wits just that much sharper. Never hurts to have a cutting edge.

The Puzzle: You enter a room and are given 8 marbles. All look identical, but 1 weighs slightly more than the other 7, so slightly that you cannot tell which is heavier just by holding them. You are also given a scale that you can use to weigh the marbles, but it can only be used twice. How do you determine which marble is the heavy one?

Look at that, nobody in the Wordle Bot’s sample of 224,536 entries did it just like me! Just goes to show how mathematically awesome language is, even when dealing with only five-letter words. Imagine if Wordle used seven-letter words!
My guessing game was pretty on-point today, at long last. THIEF left me with just 65 words and DUVET slashed that down to just 4. I got very lucky on my last guess, DETER for the win!

How To Play Competitive Wordle
Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “deter” comes from the Latin verb “deterre,” which is composed of the prefix “de-” meaning “away” and the verb “terrere” meaning “to frighten” or “to scare.” So, “deterre” literally means “to frighten away.” The term entered the English language in the late 16th century, retaining its original sense of discouraging or preventing someone from taking an action through fear or doubt.
