Tottenham 2-1 Burnley: Van de Ven strikes late to give Spurs late comeback win

Tottenham went a goal down to Burnley at home on Saturday, but battled back over the course of the final hour to end their 2023-24 home campaign on a high and send the Clarets back to the EFL Championship next season.

The victory puts Tottenham (63 points – 5th place) four points behind Aston Villa for the fourth and final Champions League place. Both sides have two games left to play in the final week of the season. Burnley (24 points – 19th) have officially been relegated from the Premier League after just one season back in the top flight.

Burnley got out to a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, when Sander Berge slotted a through ball in behind Spurs’ defense and found Jacob Bruun Larsen all by himself in acres of space. Bruun Larsen dribbled to 12 yards out and fired past Guglielmo Vicario for his sixth PL goal this season.

Porro, Van de Ven goals highlight importance of full backs to Ange-ball

Tottenham were level seven minutes later, though, as Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson played a one-two to send the Spaniard into even more space than Bruun Larsen had. Goalkeeper Arijanet Muric was beaten at the near post from a difficult, tight angle.

Ange Postecoglou’s side eventually took control of the game midway through the second half, after a few back-and-forth chances, and it was Micky van de Ven, who shifted to left back with Oliver Skipp coming off, who got the late winner. James Maddison found the big Dutchman on the edge of the penalty area, Van de Ven danced around the ball and slotted an off-balance, left-footed finish past Muric for PL goal no. 3 of his debut season.

What’s next?

Spurs will have a quick turnaround to face three-time defending champions Manchester City in a make-up fixture on Tuesday (3 pm ET) before visiting last-place Sheffield United on Championship Sunday (11 am ET). Burnley will host Nottingham Forest at Turf Moor to close out the campaign next Sunday.
