For just about as long as there have been rock bands with huge fanbases, there have been tributes and cover groups to cater to a small fraction of those fans.
As classic rock groups age and superstar singers pass on, more and more tributes take to the road, performing their best versions for audiences who long to see the original but can’t because they either no longer tour, their tickets are too expensive or, sadly, they’re no longer alive.
For instance, when American rock group the Eagles performed a few months ago at Little Caesars Arena, tickets just to be in the room were well over $200. In February, Canadian Eagles tribute band Hotel California rolls through town, performing the band’s massive catalog of hits at the Emerald Theatre in Mount Clemens. Tickets start at $25.
While the guys in Hotel California don’t look like Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh and Randy Meisner (or anyone else that’s been in the Eagles), they don’t need to. The group, which has been around since the 1980s, focuses instead on having vocal harmonies and musicianship that matches the real thing.
For other tributes, part of the fun is that there’s a resemblance, like Robert Bartko’s George Michael Reborn show, which is coming for the first time next month to Andiamo Celebrity Showroom. Bartko dresses and dances like the late British singer and has a similar high tenor. His show includes Michael’s solo hits as well as Wham! songs.
Venues like the Magic Bag in Ferndale have long been hosts of tribute acts and cover bands that pay homage to certain eras like 1980s pop or ’90s rock. More theaters are getting in on the action, too, like the Sound Board at MotorCity Casino, which has added many touring tribute acts to its concert calendar. New venues like District 142 in Wyandotte the Roxy Rochester also have lineups of mostly cover acts in 2024.
At Andiamo Celebrity Showroom, owner Joe Vicari said he likes to book talent that emulate artists who have retired or died. He’s not sure there’s a market for acts that mimic artists that are still alive and touring, like Cher.
“It just brings you back … I think that’s a lot of it,” he said, adding that his customers appreciate the nostalgia of it all. “It resonates, it brings back good memories for them.”
Andiamo gives concertgoers the option for dinner and a show. They can book a table at the Italian restaurant ahead of the show, or snack on bar-style food like sliders and wings in the showroom. Occasionally there will be a dinner-and-show package, like on Valentine’s Day with crooner William “Smooth” Wardlaw, who performs the songs of Luther Vandross.
“He looks just like him, he sounds like him,” said Vacari.
Fans of arena rock, Motown, classic crooners, pop stars and more will likely find a tribute act to suit them coming through town in the next few months. Read on for a schedule of some of the highlights.
